Broncos Cruise to Sweep Over Toros on Dig 4 A Cure Night

CARSON -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team celebrated its "Dig 4 A Cure" night as it hosted visiting Cal Poly Pomona, but the Broncos made the Toros see red in a 25-14, 25-17, 25-19 sweep to drop the hosts to 2-17, 1-14 CCAA.

Morelia Castro led CSUDH with 8 kills and a .312 hitting percentage.

The Broncos took control early in set one, going on 4- and 6-point runs to take a 13-5 lead, and on 5-point run to open up an 18-6 edge en route to a convincing 25-14 win.

CSUDH found its groove in the next frame, taking a 6-4 lead after a Castro blast and Bronco attack error.

The two teams would tie at 6, 7, 8 and 9 before the Toros inched out to a 14-11 edge courtesy of a Bridget Heins blast, but the Broncos would go on a 13-2 run off eight Nicoletta serves to take a 24-17 lead, with an Alexa Hasen putting away the first set point opportunity.

That did little to negate the CSUDH fight however, as the Toros clawed back from an early 8-1 deficit in the third to knot the game at 10-10 on a CPP error, taking a 13-11 lead on another Heins blast.

Up 15-13 on another Heins kill, CPP asserted its well to the tune of a 9-1 run, with Megan Byrne hammering home the match's final point in the three-set win.

CPP hit .288 compared to .047 for the hosts, with Bronco Deanna Blaine tallying match-high honors with 14 putaways.

Leilani Martinez saved 22 balls in the loss, with Rylee Kiger dishing 15 assists.

The Toros take to the road next weekend to take on the Bays, traveling to Seaside to face CS Monterey on Halloween.
