Toros Take Down Tritons in Overtime Road Thriller

Box Score

LA JOLLA -- Junior Talia Rayford helped keep the Toros on top in a 68-67 overtime win over the UC San Diego Tritons on Friday night, sinking 16 points and collecting eight boards in the game with four steals.

The Toros improve to 11-4 and 7-4 CCAA, while the Tritons fall to 10-5, 7-4 CCAA after erasing a 17-point second half deficit.

With 11:46 left in the game, a three-pointer by Tayler Champion put the Toros up by 17, 50-33. However, the Tritons stormed back, crafting a 22-5 run to keep themselves in it. A pair of free throws by Megan Perry with 17 seconds left tied it at 55-55. CSUDH regained the lead with a layup with four seconds remaining in regulation, but the Tritons weren't done. With just .4 seconds on the clock, Stephanie Yano inbounded the ball to Perry, who hit a 10-foot jumper to send the crowd into a frenzy and the game into extra time.

UCSD got out to a four-point lead, 62-58, in the opening minute of the overtime period. However, three straight free throws by Shomari McCorkle and a steal and layup by Rayford gave the Toros a 63-62 lead and they would not trail again. With five seconds left, Perry drained a three to get the Tritons back within a point at 68-67, but CSUDH successfully ran out the clock.

Prior to tonight's loss, UCSD had won the previous 19 meetings against CSUDH, dating back to the 2004-05 season.

The Toros will try to make it a road sweep tomorrow night at CS San Bernardino.
