Toros Drop 4-1 Decision to No. 5 HSU in Battle of Home Runs at CCAA Tourney

Box Score

STOCKTON -- Junior sensation Adriana Sanchez led off today's opening game of the CCAA Championship Tournament with a home run on the first pitch of the game, but top-seeded and 5th-ranked Humboldt State clubbed three home runs of its own to topple the fourth-seeded Toros in Arnaiz Stadium.

The loss, coupled with UC San Diego's loss to Sonoma State in the late game, pits last year's NCAA Super Regional finalists against one another in the first elimination game of the CCAA Tournament, set for 3:30 pm

Sanchez took the first pitch she saw from CCAA Freshman of the Year Katie Obbema over the centerfield fence for a quick 1-0 lead, and had a chance to blow the game open later in the inning after loading the bases, but Obbema fanned senior Jessica Hall to escape the jam.

The long ball theme continued as the nation's leader in home runs tied the game in the 2nd on the first of two Hannah Williams' bombs, with Chrissy Stalf giving HSU he lead for good with a solo blast in the 3rd.

HSU doubled its score one inning later, with Williams again doing the honors, this time with a runner on base.

The Toros had another golden opportunity to get on the board in their final at-bat after loading the bases with one out, but Obbema induced a fly-out by Brittany Brenner and a grounder by Toro starter Stephanie Jimenez to seal the win.

Sanchez led all batters with three hits, with Kaci McGinnis adding two in the loss that drops the Toros to 34-18 overall.

The Toros and Tritons split their four regular season games in Carson, with each team scoring 11 runs in the series.
