Toros Bow Out of NCAA Super Regional as No. 5 HSU Takes 6-2 Win to Advance to CWS

Box Score

CARSON -- Humboldt State sophomore Dani Randall stepped into a 2-2 offering headed toward the outside part of the plate with the bases loaded and the fifth-ranked Jacks clinging to a 2-1 lead, and the result was an opposite field grand slam to give HSU a 6-1 lead in an eventual 6-2 win that puts the Lumberjacks into the College World Series next week, set to begin on Thursday.

With the loss, the Toros drop their second-straight NCAA Super Regional on Toro Diamond to a league school, and see their season end at 37-24.

Here's head coach Jim Maier's post-game interview:

Today's game was virtually a case of deja vu all over again as the Jacks scored first in a nip-and-tuck game, and put the game away with another slam in another big inning.

Allowing just three hits in the first four innings, including a two-out solo shot by yesterday's offensive hero in Julie Pena that staked HSU to a 1-0 lead in the 2nd, Toro starter Lauren Harper kept the Jack offense off balance early, until a pair of hits in the 5th gave HSU a 2-1 lead after Brittany Brenner tied the game at 1-1 on a bloop single that just went over the glove of second baseman Megan Wink that plated Catherine Brown, who began the rally with a single off pitcher Katie Obbema's glove.

That's where the score remained until the 7th when a lead-off single and base on balls prompted Stephanie Jimenez to enter in relief of Harper.

Jimenez, however, after starting the game at first base, plunked Tonya Walker on a 1-0 offering, setting up Randall's blast to put the game away.

Like yesterday, Adriana Sanchez clubbed a late-game home run, her 20th of the season, but it was too little, too late as Obbema retired the next three batters in order to punch HSU's ticket to Salem next week.
