No. 5 Jacks Take Game One of NCAA Super Regional, 8-5

Adriana Sanchez clubbed her 19th home run of the year, but it wasn't enough in today's 8-5 loss in game one of the NCAA Super Regional

CARSON -- Fifth-ranked and top-seeded Humboldt State did what it does best as it clubbed a pair of home runs, including a grand slam by Julie Pena in a decisive 7-run 5th, to take the opening stanza of the 2013 NCAA West Super Regional over 6th-seeded Cal State Dominguez Hills in the best two-of-three series.

With the win, the 51-12 Lumberjacks need just one victory tomorrow to earn one of eight berths to the College World Series, while the Toros need to best HSU twice to advance to the first CWS in program history after falling to 37-23.

As the designated home team based on their higher seed, CCAA Player of the Year Chrissy Stalf got the ball rolling for the Jacks to open the bottom of the first, sending a line drive on an 0-1 offering from Stephanie Jimenez down the right field line and over the fence for a quick 1-0 lead.

That was the extent of the scoring as both Jimenez and HSU starter Katie Obbema posted zeroes on the board until the offensive fifth.

After Obbema put the first two Toro runners on with consecutive walks to start the frame, a sacrifce bunt and infield fly looked to keep the Toros in check.

But a Jimenez double that found the left-center field gap brought in Adriana Sanchez and pinch-runner Rachel Gulbrandsen, and Brittany Brenner followed that with a line drive just over shortstop Andrea Chavez's glove for the third run of the game and a 3-1 lead.

That momentum didn't last long, however, as the Jacks took the lead for good in the 5th, sending 12 batters to the plate to chase Jimenez, with a Dani Randall 2RBI single preceding Pena's slam after Jimenez intentionally walked Hannah Williams to load the bases.

The Toros again made a game of it in the top of the 6th after Sanchez clubbed her own shot in the 6th, a 2-run blast, but starter Obbema returned to close the door on the rally, wiggling out of the 6th and surviving an intense 7th that saw the Toros come within one batter from loading the bases for Sanchez.

Sanchez finished with a 2-for-2 day, with Jimenez and Brenner added two hits each in the loss.  Tonya Walker was the lone Jack to accrue more than one hit, but HSU's two blasts proved the difference in the win.

A bright spot for the Toros' was senior pitcher Lauren Harper, who entered in relief and allowed one hit in 1.1 innings of play with three strikeouts, including one on Stalf on a 3-2 offering to lead off the 6th.

The win marked just the second victory in the past 15 games for HSU in Carson and the first since 2010, with HSU's two home runs bringing the Jacks to 109 on the year, just three short of the NCAA all-time record.

Game two of the NCAA West Super Regional will begin at 12 noon tomorrow on Toro Diamond, with the game being streamed live on www.GoToros.com/showcase.
