TURLOCK -- One year after earning its first-ever Silver Bracket Title in the annual Tournament of Champions, the Cal State Dominguez Hills earned the gold, literally, after coasting to an 8-2 win over St. Martin's to earn its first-ever Gold Bracket Championship as senior Stephanie Jimenez was named the TOC's MVP.

Jimenez finished with a 3-1 record as the Toros went 4-2, posting a 0.65 ERA with 22 strikeouts against just 3 walks over the three-day tourney as opposing hitters batted just .183 against her.

Juniors Adriana Sanchez and Veronica Vazquez also were named to the TOC All-Tournament team.

Against the Saints, the Toros started strong after SMU scored a run in the top of the 1st.

Jimenez did the honors herself with a 2RBI single to left center, scoring herself on a Brittany Brenner RBI single later in the inning.

A Sanchez RBI triple began a 4-run 2nd inning, with Catherine Brown and Christina Chavez bringing home runs with RBI singles, surrounding a Saint error that allowed the third run of the inning to score.

That was plenty for Jimenez, who scatterred just 3 hits in the game with 7 strikeouts to improve to 14-7 on the year.

Jimenez was one of three Toros to collect 2 hits, with Sanchez and Brown joining the tournament MVP.

In the opener, sophomore Kaci McGinnis laced a 2RBI single down the left field line in the bottom of the 3rd to open the scoring, and Cal State Dominguez Hills held on for a 2-1 lead over No. 9 Humboldt State to advance to the Gold Bracket title game.

Jimenez also picked up the complete-game win over the Jacks, scattering 5 hits and fanning 5 in the victory.

After a Veronica Vazquez single began the frame with a single and pinch-runner Rachel Gulbrandsen moved to third and Daisy Beltran to second after two HSU errors, McGinnis came up huge with her lone hit of the day.

Jimenez survived a lead-off home run by Chrissy Stalf in the 6th, fanning three of the final six batters she faced.

The Toros were tied for the top team batting average at .333, and finished 3rd in pitching with a team ERA of 1.09.

CSUDH, now 23-18, has just three CCAA series remaining in the regular season starting this weekend at Cal State East Bay, looking to make up 6 games in the league standings to secure one of four berths in the CCAA tournament.
