TURLOCK -- Cal State Dominguez Hills turned a 6-game skid into a 2-game win streak with a pair of wins on day one of the CS Stanislaus-hosted Tournament of Champions, taking down No. 21 Grand Canyon in a 4-3, 11-inning marathon win, before a more decisive 9-1 decision in 5 innings over Dominican.

Adriana Sanchez went 4-for-7 with a pair of runs scored and driven in over the day.

Against the ranked Antelopes, Toro starter Stephanie Jimenez and GCU starter Kiki Sepulveda kept both opposing offenses off the board through regulation, combining to scatter 11 hits over 7.0 innings of work.

GCU broke through in the top of the 8th after placing a runner on 2nd, using a base hit, stolen base and another baseknock to plate the game's first run.

CSUDH, however, came right back in the bottom of the 8th as a Christina Chavez RBI single tied the game after Rachel Gulbrandsen pinch ran for Kaci McGinnis to open the frame and was placed on 2nd.

The Lopes answered right back with another unearned run in the 9th, only to have CSUDH tie the game again as Veronica Vazquez came home on a Catherine Brown opposite field single down the left field line.

After neither team could push a run across the board in the 10th, GCU tacked on its third go-ahead run of the game to lead off the 11th, but like in previous innings, CSUDH answered back with the 11th accounting for two runs on RBI singles by Jessica Hall and Daisy Beltran to win it.

Jimenez picked up the complete-game win after allowing 9 hits and no earned runs, fanning five Lopes in the process.

Hall paced the offense with a 3-for-4 performance, with Adriana Sanchez, Jamie Duran and Brown chipping in two hits each.

Against Dominican, the Toros left no doubt as to the outcome of this contest, scoring a pair of runs in each of the first three innings, and 3 runs in the fourth to put the game away.

A McGinnis 2RBI single in the 1st, a Sanchez 2RBI single in the 2nd, and Vazquez 2RBI single in the 3rd brought home the first six runs, and a Chavez 2RBI single in the 4th preceded by a McGinnis RBI baseknock accounting for the final three runs for the Cardinal and Gold.

Dominican put up its lone run in the 5th after a Toro miscue, but it was too little too late in the 9-1 decision.

Toro starter Lauren Harper tossed 4.0 innings for the win, with Karen Peterson retiring the final three batters she faced in relief.

McGinnis wielded the big bat with a 3-for-3, 3RBI, 2-run performance, with Sanchez knocking two hits and Chavez and Vazquez both driving in two runs.

CSUDH resumes the TOC tomorrow with three games, beginning at 9 am against Cal Baptist.
