Toros Stay at No. 6 in Latest NCAA Region Poll

Christina Chavez sits second on the team in HR and doubles, and is one of seven seniors who will play her final regular season games at Toro Diamond this weekend
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Despite coming off its first regular season series sweep this year at Cal State Monterey Bay, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros stayed at No. 6 in the latest NCAA West Region poll of the regular season, it was announced by the NCAA.

This poll comes with just one series left in the regular season, with the Toros two games back of the fourth and final spot to qualify for the CCAA Championship Tournament.

The NCAA selection committee will select the top eight teams in each region that qualify for the NCAA postseason, with each region split up into two four-team double-elimination regionals.  The winners of each regional then move onto a super-regional the following week, with that survivor of the best-of-3 series qualifying for the NCAA Softball Championships that begin May 23, in Salem, Virginia.

CCAA league leader and NFCA No. 6 Humboldt State tops the region, with No. 18 Grand Canyon next, followed by Dixie State which moved up two spots, Sonoma State which fell one spot and No. 25 St. Martin's, which fell one spot to No. 5 and precedes the Toros, who received a single vote in the latest NFCA Top 25 tally.

Following the Toros are four teams whose regional rank remained the same as last week's in University of Hawai'i Hilo, UC San Diego, Hawai'i Pacific and Notre Dame de Namur rounding out the top 10.

CSUDH, currently at 30-19 and 17-15 CCAA, is led offensively by junior sensation Adriana Sanchez, currently hitting .414 with a CSUDH single-season record 16 home runs and a whopping .932 slugging percentage.

Sanchez's offense is bolstered by the pitching of senior Stephanie Jimenez, who has earned three CCAA Pitcher of the Week nods, including one for last week's effort that saw her go 3-0 with a 0.59 ERA and 25 walks against just two walks in four appearances.

The 30 wins marks the 11th time in 13 seasons that head coach that Jim Maier has reached that plateau.

The Toros host CS Stanislaus for the final regular season games of the year, with Saturday honoring seven seniors in between the two games.  Friday is set for a 1 pm start, with Saturday set to begin at 11 am.
