Bases Loaded Hits Fuel Toros to 4-1 and 6-1 Sweep at CS Monterey Bay

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SEASIDE -- Junior Brittany Brenner roped an opposite-field triple down the right field line with the bases loaded in the top of the 7th inning to break a 1-1 tie and give the Toros the run differential in game one's 4-1 win at CS Monterey Bay, while fellow junior Adriana Sanchez belted a bases-clearing double in the nightcap to fuel a 6-1 win for a sweep in the penultimate CCAA regular season series of the year for both teams.

With the wins, CSUDH improves to 28-19, 15-15 CCAA as seniors Stephanie Jimenez and Lauren Harper picked up wins in a key twinbill that pushed the Toros ahead of the Otters in the standings.

Jimenez and Otter starter Cori Reinhardt kept the opposing offenses off the board in the opener until the Toros threatened in the 4th, loading the bases with one out.

After Veronica Vazquez hit into an infield fly, Jasmine Ruiz was inserted as a pinch-hitter for Jessica Hall.  Head coach Jim Maier's move looked brilliant as Ruiz worked the count to 3-0, but Reinhardt buckled down with a strike and foul ball, before inducing Ruiz into a fly out to right field.

The hosts used that momentum to take a 1-0 lead on pinch-hitter Lindsey Clarkson's RBI single to open the scoring, setting the stage for the late-game heroics.

In the 7th, Jimenez led off the frame with a single up the middle, with Vazquez sacrificing pinch-runner Jamie Duran to second base.  A Hall grounder moved Duran to third, before Daisy Beltran drew a key walk to bring up slugger and lead-off hitter Adriana Sanchez.

The strategy to intentionally walk Sanchez with first base occupied backfired as Catherine Brown was plunked on a 1-0 pitch to tie the game, before Brenner's three-bagger cleared the bases.

Jimenez finished with double-figure Ks for the fifth time this year, and with no walks for the 10th time as a starter.

In the nightcap, the scoreboard was filled with zeros until the 4th when CSUDH erupted for 5 runs.  After a Jasmine Ruiz double brought home a pair of runners, Otter pitcher Clarkson ran into real trouble three batters later after loading the bases for Sanchez.

Like Brenner in the opener, Sanchez came through with a big hit, lacing an 0-2 pitch to the left center field gap to give starter Lauren Harper a 5-0 cushion.

The Otters got a run back in the 5th, only to have the Otters answer on a bases loaded walk to Hall for the game's final run.

Harper tossed 5.0 innings and allowed the one run in the win.

The two teams wrap up their four-game set tomorrow morning, with first pitch set for 11:00 am.
