Jimenez and Brenner Lead Toros to 1-0 and 5-3 Sweep at Cal State East Bay

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HAYWARD -- Senior ace and reigning CCAA Pitcher of the Week Stephanie Jimenez celebrated her birthday with a bang this afternoon, fanning eight of the first nine Cal State East Bay batters she faced as the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros took a 1-0 decision over the host Pioneers to open today's twinbill, before Brittany Brenner's 3-4, 3RBI performance pushed the Toros to a come-from-behind 5-3 win in the nightcap.

With the wins, CSUDH's fourth- and fifth-straight, the Toros improve to 25-18, 12-14 CCAA.

Jimenez was the story in the opener, fanning the side in both the 1st and 3rd innings en route to 10 Ks without a walk.

Adriana Sanchez accounted for the game's lone run with a solo blast in the 3rd to give her 14 home runs on the year, adding to the CSUDH single-season home run record she set earlier.

That proved plenty for Jimenez, who scattered three hits on the day and tossed a first-pitch strike to 17 of the 25 batters she faced in 82 total pitches, 66 of them strikes.

The Toros banged 5 hits total, with Sanchez roping a pair to lead the offense.

The nightcap saw the Toros put up the game's first two runs after Daisy Beltran doubled home Veronica Vazquez in the 2nd, and Brenner doubled home Christina Chavez in the 3rd.

CSUEB, however, tied the game with a pair in the 3rd to knock Jimenez from the game and took the lead with a single run in the 4th off reliever Karen Peterson.

CSUDH, however, answered back to tie the game in the 6th on an error by the East Bay catcher on a play at the plate, and then won the game on the second Brenner double of the day to plate Catherine Brown and Jasmine Ruiz for the game-winner.

Peterson picked up her first win of the year after tossing 3.1 innings and scattering 6 hits, with Lauren Harper picking up her first save of the year after tossing a perfect 7th inning, including a strikeout to end the game.

The two teams hook up again tomorrow morning for games three and four of the four-game set, with first pitch of game one scheduled for 11 am.
