No. 5 Toros Settle For Split at SFSU After 2-1 Nightcap Win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SAN FRANCISCO -- Fifth-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills rebounded from a 2-0 blanking in the opening game at San Francisco State to take a 2-1 win in the nightcap to salvage a split at SFSU's Softball Field.  Christina Chavez provided the offensive push in the nightcap with a solo home run en route to a 3-for-4 effort as the Toros belted 11 hits.

With the split, CSUDH moves to 15-5, 7-3 CCAA, while SFSU now stands at 9-10, 5-9 CCAA.

In the nightcap, the Toros faced a 1-0 deficit after 4 innings of play before taking their first lead of the afternoon in the 5th.

In the frame, Christina Chavez launched a solo home run on the first pitch she saw from SFSU starter Emily Gibson after the Gator retired the first two batters she faced, with three-consecutive singles to three different parts of the outfield following to give CSUDH a 2-1 lead as pinch-runner Alyssa Cruz scored on a Veronica Vazquez RBI baseknock.

CSUDH had a chance to extend its lead an inning later after singles by Catherine Brown and Adriana Sanchez placed runners at the corners, but reliever Ali Garcia induced a pair of infield line drive outs from Brittany Brenner and Chavez to quell the threat.

Toro starter Stephanie Jimenez picked up her 9th win, scattering 5 hits while fanning a pair of SFSU batters in the win.

It was all SFSU starter Marissa Ibarra in the opener as the senior was perfect for the first three innings until Sanchez opened the fourth by smacking the first pitch she saw to left field for a single.

Trying to get a rally going, however, Sanchez was thrown out trying to stretch her hit into a double to keep the minimum batters faced for Ibarra intact.

That number stayed at the minimum until the 7th inning when Sanchez again led off the inning with a single, this time to right.  But Ibarra settled in and fanned the final three batters she faced to seal the shutout win in facing just 22 total batters.

Toro starter Lauren Harper was saddled with the loss, fanning 7 Gators against 3 walks, allowing 6 hits and an earned run to drop to 6-4 on the year.

The two teams will conclude their four-game set tomorrow at SFSU's Softball Field, with first pitch of game one set for 11 am.
