Softball Drops to No. 21 in Latest NFCA Poll

Junior slugger Adriana Sanchez set the CSUDH record for home runs in a season with her 2nd blast in Saturday's 8-0 (5) nightcap win over UCSD
STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Having split last weekend's home series against perennial power UC San Diego, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros dropped one spot to No. 21 in this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) poll.

At No. 21, the Toros are joined by CCAA's Sonoma State at No. 15, with Grand Canyon at No. 8 topping the NCAA West Region schools included in the poll and the Tritons and Dixie State both receiving votes this week.

Offensively, CSUDH boasts a trio of batters hitting at least .370, led by newcomer Adriana Sanchez.

The transfer leads the league in home runs, hits and slugging percentage, sits 2nd in batting average and runs, 4th in RBI, 5th in on-base percentage, 7th in doubles and 12th in triples.

In fact, with her 11th and 12th home runs hit in Saturday's nightcap against UCSD, Sanchez now holds the CSUDH record for home runs in a single season, with half the season remaining on the docket to add onto her total.

Junior Brittany Brenner, meanwhile, sits 7th in OB%, 8th in walks, 9th in doubles and BA, 11th in runs and hits, 12th in SLG%, 15th in HRs and 25th in RBI, with senior Christina Chavez
continuing to provide production placing 4th in triples, 9th in doubles, SLG% and home runs, 11th in hits, 12th in BA, 13th in RBI, 15th in walks and OB%, and 17th in runs.

Additionally, CSUDH's offense has benefited from senior ace Stephanie Jimenez sitting 2nd in doubles, junior Veronica Vazquez placing 14th in doubles, sophomore Stephanie Hua at 21st in doubles, 22nd in HRs and 23rd in RBI, with freshman Jamie Duran at 12th in triples and 22nd in HRs.

In the circle, CSUDH is led by seniors Stephanie Jimenez and Lauren Harper, who have garnered all 17 wins for CSUDH this year.

Currently at 10-3, Jimenez sits 2nd in both ERA and wins, and 4th in strikeouts, with Harper at 7-6 placing 2nd in strikeouts and 9th in both wins and ERA.

This marks the second time in five weeks that CSUDH hasn't been in the top 5 after three-straight weeks at No. 5, with the all-time highest rank coming at No. 2 on March 8, 2006.

West Texas A&M held onto the top spot, receiving 15 of the possible 16 first-place votes, with Indianapolis moving up a spot to No. 2.  Topping the pre-season poll, Valdosta State sits at No. 3, with the only other first-place nod, with Armstrong State and SE Oklahoma State rounding out the top 5.

In the NCAA west, Grand Canyon dropped one to No. 8, with Sonoma State also falling one to No. 15 to top the two CCAA schools included in this week's poll.

UC San Diego and Dixie State both received votes.

CSUDH, currently at 17-9 and 9-7 CCAA, sits in 5th place in the league standings and embarks on a month-long schedule away from Toro Diamond, with this weekend's stop set for Rohnert Park to battle Sonoma State and its all-everything pitcher Samantha Lipperd.
