No. 20 Toros Split Day One With Tritons to Open Four-Game Set

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CARSON -- Senior Lauren Harper scattered 5 hits while fanning 5 as Alyssa Cruz-Fernandez (pictured) belted her first home run of the year as the 20th-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros took a 2-1 win over visiting UC San Diego in game one of today's twinbill, only to see the Tritons unleash a 10-hit attack in the 6-1 UCSD game two win.

The Toros fall to 16-8, 8-6 CCAA with the split, while the Tritons now stand at 16-12, 12-7 CCAA.

The opener saw both pitchers stand toe-to-toe through 2.5 innings of play, before the Toros put the afternoon's first run on the board in the 3rd.

After a Daisy Beltran lead-off single started the frame, a fielder's choice, walk and Triton set the stage for Jessica Hall, who celebrated her first game at Toro Diamond this year with an RBI single to third to score Adriana Sanchez.

CSUDH made it 2-0 an inning later as Cruz belted a full-count offering from UCSD starter Alexis Edwards over the right-center field fence.

That run proved huge as UCSD cut its deficit to 2-1 after a Caitlin Brown RBI single in the 6th, but Harper was up to the task as she fanned Nicole Spangler on a 2-2 pitch to escape the jam in the 2-1 win.

Harper improved to 7-5 on the day as each side belted 5 hits in the contest.

The nightcap saw UCSD score first on a Brown RBI single, and looked to make it 2-0 until Sanchez's rocket from center field cut down Brown by two steps after Brown tried to score from 2nd on a Mya Romero single.

After a Sanchez RBI baseknock in the 3rd tied the game at 1-1, it was all UCSD as the Tritons scored single runs in the 4th and 5th, and 3 in the 6th to put the game away.

CSUDH starter Stephanie Jimenez suffered the loss after allowing 10 hits and 4 earned runs with six different Toros knocking one hit each.

The two teams hook up again tomorrow at high noon, with the game being heard live on the Toro Sports Network.
