Toros Earn No. 6 Seed in CCAA Tourney After 71-59 Loss at No. 5 Cal Poly Pomona

CSUDH will face nemesis Chico State on the road for Tuesday's 1st-round match-up

POMONA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills ran into a determined and league leading Cal Poly Pomona squad celebrating its "Senior Night," and the result was a 71-59 win for the 5th-ranked Broncos that secures the 6th seed for the Toros in the upcoming CCAA Tournament.

With the loss that drops their record to 16-13, 12-10 CCAA, the Toros will travel to Chico to face the No. 3 seed in Chico State for the fourth-straight year, with the Wildcats having taken two of three wins in the prior 1st-round match-ups.

In a game of two halves, the Toros kept close with the Broncos in the first session, drawing to a 34-31 deficit after the first 20 minutes of play.

The second half, however, was all Pomona as the Broncos opened up a 44-33 lead just five minutes into the period, and to 18 at 55-37 at the 11:06 mark.

CSUDH closed to gap to single digits on a Givon Crump jumper with just under six minutes left in regulation, only to have the Broncos answer by upping their edge again to double figures in the eventual 12-point win.

Pierson Williams led the Toros witih 11 points including 3-of-7 from long range, with Crump adding 10 points and 5 boards in the loss.

The Toros made just 16 field goals, with half coming from downtown as CSUDH shot just 8-of-30 from 3-point land.

Conversely, CPP drained 57.1% of its shots as three players scored at least 10 points, while converting on 5-of-13 makes from long range as it improved to 24-2, 20-2 CCAA.
