Sweet 16 Leads No. 11 to Day One Sweep at Desert Stinger in Wins Over WNMU and Simon Fraser

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Junior Brittany Brenner (pictured) went 6-for-6 at the plate while Adriana Sanchez added a 5-for-6 performance with 6 RBI as the No. 11 Toros scored 16 runs in a 6th inning explosion to take a 22-3 win over Simon Fraser to end day one of the Desert Stinger, after a more conventional 7-2 win over Western New Mexico to begin the tournament.

With the wins, CSUDH improves to 6-1 with its second-straight decision as program records were set for most hits in a game, most runs in a game and most runs in a single inning.

Averaging 5 runs per game heading into the late game against Simon Fraser, the Toros looked to be on track after taking a 6-0 lead after two innings as 2RBI baseknocks by Sanchez and Stephanie Hua provided the big blows.

After continuing to show her dominance in earlier appearances, starter Stephanie Jimenez ran into trouble in the bottm of the fifth after allowing a 2-run blast to cut CSUDH's lead to 5-2.

But the Toros quickly added to their lead in the top of the sixth as CSUDH sent 19 batters to the plate with 11 of them getting hits, including three by Brenner and 4RBI by Sanchez in the frame, including a 2-run jack in the monster and record-setting inning that eclipsed a 9-run frame against the then College of Notre Dame on March 23, 1990.

Brenner's 6 hits broke Toro All-American Cindy Perry's record of 5 hits set against CS Bakersfield on March 12, 2004, with the 22 runs breaking the former record of 19 runs scored against the University of Redlands on March 23, 1990.

In the first game against Western New Mexico, the Toros staked starter Lauren Harper to a 3-0 lead in the third thanks in large part to a 2RBI triple by Christina Chavez, adding a pair of runs in the fourth after back-to-back jacks by Sanchez and Veronica Vazquez.

That's where the score remained until the teams split the next four runs scored in CSUDH's 7-2 win, with Harper fanning 14 batters against just 2 walks.

Sanchez, Chavez and Brenner each roped a pair of hits as the Toro bats ran through a quartet of Mustang pitchers.

CSUDH continues the Desert Stinger tomorrow against Colorado School of Mines at 11:30 am, followed by the tournament's lone match-up pitting ranked schools against each other as the Toros face No. 24 Dixie State at 2 pm.
