No. 11 Toros Split on Final Day at BWI

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TURLOCK -- After dominating its first three opponents with stellar pitching yesterday in three shutout wins, the 11th-ranked Toros supported their senior aces with the long ball as Christina Chavez (pictured) and Adriana Sanchez went deep in this morning's 6-2 win over host CS Stanislaus at the Best of the West Invitational, before San Francisco State dealt the Toros their first loss of the year in 6-4 nightcap.

In the five tournament games, the Toros outscored their opponents 28-8 while senior aces Stephanie Jimenez and Lauren Harper combined for 58 strikeouts.

In the opener, the Toros used scoring in the later half of the game to subdue the Warriors, as a 3-run 4th and 6th took care of the scoring, with Chavez's 2-run blast, Sanchez's homer and RBI baseknocks by Chavez and Stephanie Hua providing the big blows.

Senior Lauren Harper tossed 5.0 innings to pick up the win, while fellow senior Stephanie Jimenez tossed a pair of innings for her first save of the year.

Chavez drove home three runs after a 2-for-3 effort, with Sanchez also going 2-for-3, adding 2 runs scored.

In the late game, CSUDH looked to make it a clean sweep of the BWI after taking a 4-0 lead on the Gators after their 3rd-inning at-bat with Chavez batting home a pair of runs and Catherine Brown one, with Jasmine Ruiz's RBI coming via a sacrifice fly.

SFSU, however, began its comeback in the bottom of the 3rd with two runs, and then made it complete in the 6th with four runs to take the lead for good.

CSUDH mounted one final attempt at its own comeback in the top of the 7th after Jimenez belted a one-out single, but a fielder's choice and fly out ended the would-be threat, handing the Toros their first loss of the year.

Harper picked up the loss after lasting just 2.2 innings and giving up 6 hits and 4 runs, while Jimenez tossed the final 3.1 allowing 5 hits and 2 runs.

For their efforts during the tournament, Jimenez and Chavez were the two Toros named to the BWI All-Tournament team.

The Toros will head to Las Vegas next week for the Desert Stinger Tournament, hosted by Montana State Billings.  Information on the tournament can be found here.
