No. 11 Toros Split With Chico State on "Think Pink" Day, Take Series 3-to-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CARSON -- It was nearly deja vu all over again as the Toros erupted offensively in today's opener against Chico State in a 10-1, 6-inning win due to the mercy run rule, before nearly pulling off the come-from-behind nightcap win in a more defensive battle that resulted in a 4-3 loss as the Toros and their fans enjoyed "Think Pink" day, to help raise awareness for breast cancer.

Veronica Vazquez drove in 3 runs in the opening-game win as the Toros move to 11-3, 3-1 CCAA.  The Wildcats, meanwhile, now stand at 3-6, 1-3 CCAA.

The split also snapped CSUDH's regular season home winning streak at 27, extending back to the 2012 campaign when the Toros went a perfect 24-0 at home during the regular season.

It look as if CSUDH's hot bats cooled off after scoring 13 runs yesterday, as game one was scoreless after 2 innings of play.

Thanks to RBI singles by Adriana Sanchez and Christina Chavez, however, the Toros took a 2-0 lead, and increased their edge to 5-1 after four, with the big blow coming on a Brittany Brenner 2RBI single.

That's where the score remained until the Toros broke the game open in the 6th, playing 5 runs to end the game due to the "mercy run" rule.

In the frame, a wild pitch scored Daisy Beltran with the first run, with a Catherine Brown RBI single and a Vazquez bases-clearing single bringing home the final three, the last coming home on a Wildcat error.

That was plenty for Toro starter Lauren Harper, who tossed a complete game 4-hitter, fanning 6 against just one walk.

In the nightcap, CSUDH opened the scoring again after a Stephanie Hua sacrifice fly in the 1st, only to see the Wildcats score four unanswered over the next two innings to take a 4-1 lead.

True to their never-say-die attitude, however, the Toros had a chance to tie after scoring a single run in the 6th on a Hua RBI double and another run in the 7th on a Sanchez bomb to right center brougth them to within 4-3, but SFSU wiggled out of a runner at 3B, two-out situation by inducing a ground out for the win.

Sanchez went 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored, with Hua driving in a pair of runs in the loss.

CSUDH will resume action in two weeks as CS San Bernardino visits Toro Diamond to kick off the month of March.
