No. 11 Toros Power to Friday Sweep Over Chico State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CARSON -- Eleventh-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills took a pair of very disparate games over visiting Chico State to open CCAA league play, belting four home runs in an 11-1, 5-inning mercy run rule contest before benefiting from three Wildcat errors in a 2-0 nightcap win.  Christina Chavez enjoyed a 4-for-5, 3RBI 2R afternoon, belting a home run in the opener for good measure.

With the wins, CSUDH improves to 10-2, 2-0 CCAA, while CSUC falls to 2-5, 0-2 CCAA.

The opener was over in a hurry after the Toros scored 9 runs in the first 2 innings of play.  After a Chavez 3-run blast following a pair of walks to lead off the bottom of the first gave Toro starter Lauren Harper a 3-0 cushion, the Toros put the game away in the second with six, the big blow coming on an Adriana Sanchez 2-run blast, cementing her current reign as the CCAA Player of the Week.

Brittany Brenner connected for another tape measure home run one inning later, with freshman Jamie Duran accounting for the fourth and final bomb of day in the fourth as the Toros closed the scoring in the 11-1 win as Harper picked up the win tossing 4.0 innings with 7 strikeouts and just one walk.

The nightcap proved to be a different story line, but with same result.

After failing to score in the bottom of the 1st, the Toros scored all the runs they would need in the second on just one hit and a pair of Wildcat errors.  Stephanie Hua began the frame with a double into the right-centerfield gap, and came home on an error by the right fielder, with Duran reaching on a fielder's choice, advancing to second, stealing third and scoring on an error by the catcher.

That was plenty for starter Stephanie Jimenez, who mowed down the Chico State line-up to the tune of 12 strikeouts against just two walks in a complete-game shutout.

The two teams will conclude their four-game set tomorrow morning at 11 am, with the day being softball's designated "Think Pink" day.  The games can be heard live on the Toro Sports Network by clicking here.
