Toro Offense Fuels 74-70 Win at CS Monterey Bay in CCAA Action

Box Score

SEASIDE -- Winless in California Collegiate Athletic Associaton action entering tonight, Cal State Dominguez Hills shot a sizzling 60.9% from the field in the second half to propel the Toros to their first CCAA win of the year in a 74-70 victory over a game CS Monterey Bay club.

Givon Crump posted a game-high 22 points that included a perfect 6-for-6 effort from the foul line to offset an otherwise poor free throw shooting performance by both teams as CSUDH improves to 4-4, 1-2 CCAA.

CSUMB (2–3, 0–2 CCAA) went just 3–of–18 from beyond the arc before making three of its final four attempts in the final 37 seconds of regulation.  CSUDH, on the other hand, got four treys on seven attempts out of Crump, who entered the night a less–than–stellar 10–of–34 (29 percent) from long range.

Despite its frigid shooting, the Otters forged a 36–34 halftime lead, including a Tim Darkwa layup giving the hosts their final lead at 48–46 nine minutes into the second half.

But a Darnell Martin dunk and a Pierson Williams 3–pointer put the Toros back on top at 51–48. The Otters would score just two points over the ensuing seven minutes as CSUDH built its lead to a game–high 63–52.

CSUMB couldn't get closer than four points the rest of the way as DeShaun Freeman added 15 points 8 boards, and Everett Turner with 13 points in the win.

Chris Carvin assisted on five baskets on the night to lead all players as CSUDH drained 51.9% of its shots in the contest.

The Toros will compete in an exhibition contest at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo next Saturday before departing for the Dixie State College hosted Las Vegas Challenge in the middle of the following week, with their home opener set for Sunday, December 22, hosting cross-town rival Cal State L.A. at 3 pm.
