Golden Eagles Sweep Season Series After 74-67 Decision Over Toros to End Calendar Year

Box Score
CARSON -- Senior Givon Crump went for team-highs in points and rebounds, but visiting Cal State L.A. received a 24-point performance from Joshua Munzon as the Golden Eagles took a 74-67 decision to sweep the regular season series from the Toros as the two teams closed the 2013 calendar year.

With the loss, CSUDH's third-straight, the Toros drop to 4-7 overall, and 1-3 in CCAA play.

The Golden Eagles blitzed the Toros from downtown in the first 20 minutes of play, nailing 8-of-12 triples as part of its 19 field goals made, with Joshua Munzon and Duce Zaid nailing three treys each.  CSULA also distributed eight more assists and turned the ball over three less times than the hosts with Munzon leading all players with 18 points in the first half.

The Toros, meanwhile, were led by Givon Crump's 12 points that included a perfect 4-of-4 from the foul line.

A 9-2 run to open the second half brought CSUDH back to within 11 at 50-39 after a Darnell Martin jumper, but a quick 4-0 CSULA run again gave the visitors control of the action.

The Golden Eagle lead hovered around double-digits until the 5-minute mark with a pair of Crump free throws bringing the Toros to within single digits, but a Davon Potts triple and Aaron Alston dunk provided breathing room as a Crump 3-pointer with eight seconds left accounted for the final 74-67 tally.

Pierson Williams added 18 points with four 3-pointers, but 16 Toro turnovers were instrumental in the loss.

As a team, CSUDH shot just 37.5% from the floor compared to 50.0% for the guests, with CSULA drilling an astounding 66.7% from 3-point land to stay undefeated in CCAA play (7-1, 4-0 CCAA), percentages that are rare against Powell-coached teams whose foundations center on stingy defense.

The Toros will look to get back on the winning track the first weekend of the 2014 calendar year, hosting Sonoma State for a 7:30 pm first tip in the Torodome.
