No. 2 Seattle Pacific Too Good in 79-65 Season-Opening Win Over Toros at Tip-Off Classic

Box Score

ANAHEIM -- Led by a game-high 23 points from David Downs, NABC preseason No. 2 Seattle Pacific boasted four players in double-figure scoring en route to a 79-65 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the season opener for both teams as day one of the West Coast Tip-Off Classic came to a close.

Givon Crump scored 17 points to lead the Toros as CSUDH's 14 turnovers proved costly in the loss.

The Toros looked good early against the Falcons after a Crump triple at the 13:46 mark gave CSUDH a 12-10 edge, only to see the Falcons out-score the Toros 34-20 over the half to enter the break with a 44-32 lead, one that was cut from 15 after Pierson Williams drained a triple with one tick left before intermission.

After the break, the Toros whittled their deficit to nine after a pair of Crump free throws eight minutes into the second half, and to as little as five on a layup by Darnell Martin with 4:14 left in regulation.

The Falcons, however, scored the next five points to regain momentum, and drained their foul shots down the stretch including their final seven in the eventual 79-65 triumph.

Martin finished with 12 points in his Toro debut, with Williams netting 11, including nine from 3-point land.

The Toros shot a solid 46.9% from the field and 42.9% from behind the arc, but stellar free throw shooting by the Falcons (23-28, 82.1%) and a -8 differential in turnovers favoring SPU proved costly in CSUDH's loss.

Center Moriba DeFreitas tallied 3 blocks in his Toro debut, with 14 of Downs' 23 points coming via the charity stripe.

CSUDH will resume play in the tournament tomorrow afternoon as they take on Texas A&M International in a 1:30 pm tip.
