Crump's 20 Not Enough in 76-66 Loss at Cal State L.A.

Box Score

LOS ANGELES -- Senior Givon Crump hit 7-of-8 free throws en route to a team-high 20 points, but host Cal State L.A. received a game-high 24 points from Quinton Watkins as the Golden Eagles took a 76-66 decision in the CCAA opener for both teams.

The Toros even their record at 3-3, and sit 0-1 in CCAA play.

The Golden Eagles shot 49.1% for the game compared to just 39.2% for the Toros, including a 58.6% clip in a first half that saw CSULA take a 46-39 halftime lead, with its biggest lead of the half coming at the 1:03 mark at 39-29 before a Crump triple cut the lead to five with just 13 ticks left in the first half.

The Toros cut their lead to just one to begin the second half on a pair of free throws by DeShaun Freeman, until CSULA opened its lead back up to 56-47 with just under 13 minutes left in reguation.

A Pierson Williams triple and a pair of Darnell Martin free throws brought the Toros to within 58-55 three minutes later, with another pair of Martin freebies cutting CSULA's lead to 63-62 with 5:23 left.

That would be as close as the Toros would get, however, as a 10-0 run all but put the game away in the 10-point win.

Crump posted a double-double with a game-high 13 rebounds with Freeman adding 16 points in the loss.

CSUDH continues CCAA road action next weekend in Hayward to take on Cal State East Bay, with first tip set for 7:30 pm.
