Toros Fall Short Against Cal State Monterey Bay, 78-66

Box Score
CARSON -- Defending CCAA Champion Cal State Monterey Bay shot a sizzling 56.3% in the first half and withstood a spirited second-half rally by the Toros en route to a 78-66 win tonight in Carson.  Julia Poecksteiner led CSUDH with 12 points in the loss.

In the loss, the Toros fall to 2-7, 1-4 CCAA, while the Otters improve to 6-1, 3-1 CCAA.

The Otters took control from the opening tip, nailing 56.3% of their first half shots compared to just 30.0% for the Toros en route to a commanding 47-28 hafltime lead.  A good chunk of CSUMB's scoring came from downtown as the Otters drained half their 14 attempts from long range, with the Toros misfiring on 8 of their 10 tries, with Poecksteiner accounting for 10 of CSUDH's points in the first 20 minutes of play.

The second half took a different turn as the Toros opened the frame with a 13-5 spurt to cut their deficit to just 52-41 at the first media time out of the second half.

But CSUMB, despite cooling off from the floor and being out-scored by 7 in the period, held on for the 78-66 win.

Breanne Garcia added 10 in the loss, with Denisha Lundy chipping in 7 pints, 5 assists and 3 rebounds.

Danielle Padilla finished with 14 points for game-high honors to lead four Otters in double-figure scoring.

CSUMB's acumen from long range was evident as the Otters drained 40.9% of their threes, compared to just 31.6% for the hosts, while the visitors survived a 19 to 11 turnover deficiency in holding off the Toros.

CSUDH will look to get back in the win column tomorrow night as Cal State East Bay visits Carson for a 5:30 pm first tip after the Pioneers were held to just 38 points in a loss to Cal State L.A. earlier.  The contest will be streamed live on the Toro Sports Network.
