Toros Stay Atop NCAA West; Move Up One to No. 9 in NFCA

Top eight schools in each region qualify; top two teams in each region host

Senior Khryssi Steele is as cool as the other side of the pillow for the top-seeded team in the NCAA west

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. / STARKVILLE, Miss. -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros remained atop the NCAA West region while moving up one to No. 9 in this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) poll, with both announced earlier this morning.

The Toros completed their bye week last week and head to CS San Bernardino this Friday and Saturday for the final weekend of league play before the CCAA Championship Tournament commences on April 27, at Arnaiz Field in Stockton.

The NCAA selection committee will select the top eight teams in each region that qualify for the NCAA postseason, with each region split up into two four-team double-elimination regionals.  The winners of each regional then move onto a super-regional the following week, with that survivor of the best-of-3 series qualifying for the NCAA Softball Championships that begin May 15, in Louisville, Kentucky.

NFCA No. 7 Cal State Monterey Bay followed the Toros as the second seed, followed by Dixie State, No. 19 Chico State, Montana State Billings, defending NCAA National Champion and 24th-ranked UC San Diego, Sonoma State, and Grand Canyon, with Cal State East Bay and Saint Martin's looking to break into the top eight.

CSUDH is led by its junior aces in the circle in Stephanie Jimenez and Lauren Harper, who both place in the top 5 in all but one pitching categories in the CCAA, with at least one sharing the league lead or placing second in five categories, including Jimenez's leading the league in saves, 2nd in opposing BA, 3rd in strikeouts and wins, 4th in strikeouts looking, and 5th in ERA and innings pitched, and Harper 2nd in strikeouts, strikeouts looking and innings pitched, 4th in ERA, opponents BA and wins, and 7th in saves.

Offensively, this year's success has been a team effort, one that boasts four regulars batting at least .325, and one at .301.

Jessica Hall leads the quartet with her .374 batting average, also placing 4th in the CCAA conference in hits and sitting 9th in runs scored.  Veronica Vazquez follows at .342 and sits 4th in triples, 6th in doubles and 9th in runs scored, with senior Khryssi Steele at .342.

Defense has been another key in CSUDH's stellar season as the Toros have committed just 34 errors compared to 73 for their opponents, making the Toros the 8th-best defensive team in the nation with a fielding percentage of 0.973.

Additionally in the NCAA, CSUDH is 14th in ERA and 20th in win-loss percentage, while Jimenez sits 4th in saves and 28th in shutouts, with Harper sitting 24th in strikeouts and Vazquez 22nd in sacrifice hits.

The NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll is voted on by 16 NCAA Division II head coaches, two representing each of the eight NCAA regions.

The NCAA regional ranking reflects the the ballots of the regional advisory committees through games played as of April 8.  The Division II National Softball Committee will make final selections on April 29, with the selection show airing on April 30 on www.NCAA.com at 10 am EST.
