Hall's Extra Inning Solo Shot in Nightcap Salvages Split for No. 5 Toros Against Defending Champs and No. 22 UCSD

LA JOLLA -- Junior Jessica Hall turned on a Camille Gaito pitch in the top of the 10th inning of game two and sent a shot deep over the left field fence to give No. 5 Cal State Dominguez Hills an eventual 4-3 win over 22nd-ranked UC San Diego after the host Tritons took a 1-0 win in the opener.

With the win, CSUDH moves to 25-4, 16-2 CCAA, while UCSD falls to 18-8, 12-6 CCAA.

After suffering a 1-0 defeat in opener, the first time all year the Toros have been blanked, CSUDH wasted little time in getting on the board in the nightcap after three walks and a bases-clearing double by Stephanie Hua gave game two starter Stephanie Jimenez a 3-0 lead in the first, where it remained through three and a half innings.

The Tritons finally broke through in the fourth thanks to five hits, tying the game at 3-3 after a Kirsten Willmon double brought home two to prompt a Toro pitching change, and an RBI single by Charly Swanberg tied things up off reliever Lauren Harper.

UCSD nearly broke the game open by loading the bases again in the frame, but Harper induced a fly out by Nicole Spangler to keep the game knotted.

That's where the score remained until the top of the 10th when Hall belted her one-out game-winner, with Harper having to escape a two-on, two-out Triton rally in the bottom of the 10th for the win.

Harper's victory was poetic justice after an opening game in which the San Diego native allowed just two hits, but was victimized by one of them, a Spangler lead-off homer in the fifth.

The Toros managed three singles off Gaito, but it wasn't enough in UCSD's 1-0 win.

The two teams go at it tomorrow in La Jolla, with first pitch of the twinbill set for a 12 noon start.
