No. 15 Toros Still Perfect at Home After 2-0 and 9-5 Sweep Over Sonoma State

Program's record streak hits 22-straight

CARSON -- Junior aces Lauren Harper and Stephanie Jimenez helped their team by earning both a win and a save in 15th-ranked CSUDH's 2-0 and 9-5 wins over visiting Sonoma State to keep the Toros perfect at home with their 21st and 22nd straight wins.

With the sweep, the Toros remain on top of the CCAA standings and improve to 29-6, 20-4 CCAA, while the Seawolves dip to 18-11, 10-10 CCAA.

The Toros got game one starter Harper all the runs she would need in a pitcher's duel featuring the San Diego native and SSU's ace in junior Samantha Lipperd.

After Lipperd retired the first two Toros she faced, junior Jessica Hall turned on a 1-1 offering and launched a line drive that cleared the left field fence for a 1-0 lead, before the hosts added another on the second Lipperd wild pitch of the inning.

SSU looked to score its first run in the fourth after loading the bases with one out, but Harper buckled down by inducing two foul outs to keep the Seawolves off the board.

Having made 106 pitches, Jimenez entered in the seventh and closed the door on any would-be SSU rally, allowing just one hit in picking up her third save of the year.

The nightcap proved more offensive after SSU took its first lead of the game on a solo blast by Keisi Chinen to open the third off Jimenez, only to have the Toros answer with four courtesy of an RBI single, two bases loaded walks and a hit batter with the bases juiced, with the HBP resulting in a SSU pitching change.

That proved little help for the Seawolves as the Toros added three more runs in the fifth, the big blow coming on a Hall 2RBI single.

Up 7-1, Jimenez ran into trouble in the sixth inning, allowing a leadoff double and ensuing home run before a hit batter signaled the end of her afternoon.

Into the circle came Harper, who survived a pair of wild pitches to keep the Seawolves at bay and the Toros in charge.

CSUDH kept its offense going with a pair of runs in the sixth on a Veronica Vazquez slicing double to right to make it 9-4, before a SSU run in the seventh accounted for the final tally.

Jimenez enjoyed a 3-for-4 afternoon with two RBI in picking up her 14th win of the year, and was aided by two hits apiece for Khryssl Steele and Vazquez.

The two teams conclude their series tomorrow morning with first pitch set for 11 am.  Between games, the Toros will honor their two seniors in Steele and Jackie Reyes before game two, with all the action able to be followed live on the Toro Sports Network at www.GoToros.com/live.
