No. 16 Toros Take 7-1 Opening Game Win Behind Harper's One-Hitter Before 9-6 Win Completes Sweep Over SFSU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
CARSON -- Reigning CCAA Pitcher of the Week Lauren Harper lived up to her billing after a nine strikeout, one-hit effort in leading the 16th-ranked Toros to a 7-1 win over visiting San Francisco State in the opener, before CSUDH withstood a 4-run 7th for the Gators in a 9-6 nightcap win to keep the hosts perfect at home.

With the wins, CSUDH improves to 20-3, 13-1 CCAA, while the Gators fall to 5-14, 3-11 CCAA.

The Toros spotted Harper to a run in both the first and second innings, with a Christina Chavez RBI double and Jessica Hall walk with the bases juiced accounting for the runs.

CSUDH added two in the fourth as Chavez added two more RBI, and then three in the fifth after SFSU notched its lone hit and run of the game in the top half of the frame, courtesy of a slicing 3RBI triple down the right field line by Veronica Vazquez with the bases full.

That was plenty for Harper as the San Diego native fanned nine batters against just two walks, tossing 72 strikes in 100 total pitches.

Chavez and Vazquez led the Toros with 3RBI each, with Khryssi Steele scoring thrice and Catherine Brown twice in the win.

In the nightcap, the Toros spoted starter Stephanie Jimenez a 4-0 lead after one inning of play, courtesy of four hits, two SFSU errors and an illegal pitch, adding another run an inning later on an RBI double by Hall.

After the Gators scored a run in the fourth on a Kelsey Murakami blast over the left field fence, CSUDH looked to put the game away with four runs in their fourth-inning at-bat, the big blow coming on a Chavez 3-run blast to left center field,.

SFSU, however, plated another run in the fifth off relief pitcher Karen Peterson, and then then put four across in the seventh to make it interesting, knocking out Jimenez after a 3-run home run by Heather Jensen and an RBI double by Summer Powell.  But in entered Harper, and out went the Gators as Harper retired the only two batters she faced to earn her first save of the year.

Chavez led the offense with a 4-for-7 afternoon, including two extra base hits and 7 RBI while Harper picked up a win and a save in the sweep.

With the two wins, head coach Jim Maier now sits at 398 wins in his career, with the 400-win milestone in reach tomorrow.

The two teams go at it again tomorrow morning for the conclusion of the four-game set, with first pitch of game one scheduled for an 11 am first pitch.  Both games can be heard live on the Toro Sports Network at www.GoToros.com/live.
