Toros Fall Victim to No. 1 UC San Diego in 77-52 Loss

Box Score
LA JOLLA - The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team wrapped up the weekend with a 77-52 loss to the No. 1 nationally ranked UC San Diego Tritons.  Porcha Davis led the Toros efforts offensively and defensively with 15 points and six rebounds Saturday night.

In the California Collegiate Athletic Association the Toros fall to 2-14, while the Tritons remain undefeated at 16-0.  Overall the Toros are 3-20 and the Tritons improve to 22-0.

The Toros started off the first five minutes like most games, challenging the Tritons offense and taking an 8-5 lead at 14:38 after a jumper by freshman Ella Rodriguez.  The Tritions, however, tied the game at 8-8 and ran away with the first half after a 17-0 run that ended just under the 10 minute mark.

Toro Rodriguez brought her team within 10 points once more after a made jumper with just over five minutes, but that was the closest the Toros came to the Tritons before wrapping up the first 20 minutes down 21.

The second half was a different story for the Toros as they held their own against the Tritons scoring 29 second half points to UC San Diego's 33.

The CSUDH offense may have improved, but their defense could not hold off strong shooting on the Tritons part, allowing them to shoot 4-for-11 from the arc and 46 percent from the floor.  Coming within 20 points was an achievement for the Toros in the second half of play before falling.

It was another strong offensive night by Davis making 5-for-12 from the floor, 3-for-7 from the foul line, and sinking two three-pointers.  Rodriguez had a season-high night of 10 points.  Sherrie Hughes had six points on the night, while Friday night leader Zipporah Brown was held to just five points.

UC San Diego was led by Emily Osga with 19 points, including 7-for-10 from the floor and made 3-for-4 from the arc. Daisy Feder also had a double-digit night with 14 points.

Neither team shined defensively, with only single digit rebounds for the Tritons and the Toros.  Leading the game with six rebounds was Davis for Cal State Dominguez Hills and Triton's Lauren Freidenberg.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team will hit the road for the last two games of their road trip, taking on Humboldt State next Thursday night and Sonoma State Saturday night.  Tip-off is at 5:30 pm both nights.
