No. 20 Toros' Win Streak Ended in Extras, But Another Starts After Nightcap Win at CS Stanislaus

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
TURLOCK -- What a difference a day makes.  After being outscored 23-to-5 and out-hit 30-to-10 in a sweep at the hands of No. 20 Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State Stanislaus lived up to its namesake by stopping the Toros' win streak at 17 after taking a 3-2 10-inning win to open up today's double-header, before the Toros began another streak in a 2-0 nightcap win.  Melissa Pacheco delivered the big blow with a 2RBI single in the 7th in the win.

With the split, the Toros improve to 18-3, 11-1 CCAA, while the Warriors move to 6-17, 1-7 CCAA.

The nightcap saw starting pitchers Stephanie Jimenez and Natalie Rendon locked in a pitcher's duel, keeping each offense at bay throught six innings.

That all changed in the top of the 7th when two walks and a fielder's choice loaded the bases for the 20th-ranked Toros.

After a ground ball was induced to force Khryssi Steele out at home, Pacheco laced a 1-1 offering from Rendon through the right side to plate Christina Chavez and Jessica Hall for what would prove to be the game's only runs.

That was plenty for Toro starter Stephanie Jimenez, who recovered from the opening game loss to befuddle the Warrior line-up, scattering just four hits while fanning two in improving to 9-1 on the year.

First baseman Jackie Reyes rapped two doubles to lead the offense in the win.

The Warriors were up to today's challenge in the opener, scoring the game's first run after Brittany Weatherford tripled on the second pitch of the game, and scored on an RBI single by Jordan Flora.

That's where the score remained until the fourth inning when Chavez led of the frame with a single, moved to second on a ground out and to third on a fly out before touching home plate on an RBI single by Reyes.

Pitching continued to take center stage in this contest with Weatherford and Lauren Harper matching zeroes the rest of the way, sending the game to extras.

In the eighth, the Warriors had a golden chance to win the game after loading the bases with one out, but reliever Karen Peterson induced two pop ups to end the threat.

The Toros looked to gain momentum in the 10th after loading the bases and bringing home the go-ahead run on a Brittany Brenner walk, but the Warriors had other ideas in their at-bat as a one-out single, double and single brought home the tying run off reliever Jimenez, before a fielder's choice brought home the game-winner to snap the streak.

Chavez, Hall and Veronica Vazquez had two hits apiece in the loss, the first defeat since February 4, also at the hands of CS Stanislaus.

Harper threw 7.0 innings in the no-decision, while Jimenez was saddled with her first loss of the year.

The Toros return home next weekend to host San Francisco State in a four-game set, with the first two taking place on Friday, March 2, set for a 12 noon start.  The games can be heard live on the Toro Sports Network at www.GoToros.com/live.
