Toros Drop Double-Overtime 60-58 Thriller at Cal Poly Pomona

CSUDH drops to No. 8 seed in CCAA Tourney and will face Chico State on Tuesday

POMONA -- Cal Poly Pomona's Mitchel Anderson took the final three-point attempt from his own back court with 0.6 seconds left in a frenetic double-overtime period and drained his prayer to give the host Broncos a thrilling 60-58 win over the Toros after Robert Willhite had given his team a one-point lead with a three of his own on the previous possession.

WIth the loss, the Toros fall to 12-12, 11-11 CCAA, and will face top-seeded Chico State in Chico on Tuesday night in the first round of the CCAA Championship Tournament.

The two teams played even for the first 20-minute stanza until the Broncos scored the half's final four points to take a 28-24 lead entering intermission.

Nip and tuck is where it remained for the duration of the second half as a 3-point Bronco lead with just seven ticks left was erased after a Myron Green 3-ball tied the game at 48-48, sending it into overtime.

A cold spell affected both squads in the first session with neither team scoring a point to send it to a second overtime, where both teams heated up from long range in the thriller.

Down four and with the clock winding down from its 2:38 status, Cornell Jenkins nailed a 35-foot bomb to cut CPP's lead to 53-52, only to have Willhite one-up his teammate with another long heave as the 35 second clock wound down to give CSUDH a 55-53 lead with 1:21 left in the second OT.

After a Tyquan Brown free throw made it a one-point game, DeRonn Scott gave the hosts a 57-55 lead with a triple of his own, before Willhite answered with another three to give the lead back to CSUDH with just six-tenths left on the clock, setting up Anderson's heroics from the back court.

The Toros shot 41.7% from the field and 43.5% from downtown, compared to 42% for the Broncos and 28.6% from 3-point range.

Willhite finished with 18 points and was aided by Wayne Andrews' 14, but Anderson's 17, Scott's 13 and Brown's 12 trumped the Toro high scorers in the end.

Cal State Dominguez Hills split its two regular season match-ups against the Wildcats, with each team winning on the road.  The Toros have dropped seven of their last eight, while the Wildcats have won eight of their last nine.
