Softball Debuts at No. 20 in First NFCA Regular Season Poll of Year

Entry breaks four-year absence from national poll

The Toros have plenty to celebrate after debuting at No. 20 on the first NFCA regular season poll of the year

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Bolstered by a program best 13-game win streak that surpassed the previous best of 12 set in 1991, the Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team made its debut at No. 20 in the first National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) regular season poll of the year, the program's first such entry since April 2, 2008, when the Toros checked in at No. 24.

This entry comes the morning of what could be an NCAA postseason preview as No. 22 Hawai'i Pacific visits Toro Diamond today for a 12 noon twinbill, which can be heard live on the Toro Sports Network at www.GoToros.com/live.

Undefeated in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play at 8-0, the 13-2 Toros dropped their first two games by a combined two runs at the Best of the West Tournament hosted by Cal State Stanislaus, before steamrolling to 13-consecutive wins, including sweeps over perennial power Humboldt State and Cal State East Bay to kick off league action the past two weekends.

CSUDH is led by its junior aces in the circle in Stephanie Jimenez and Lauren Harper, who combine to lead the league in six pitching categories including opposing batting average, strikeouts, wins and saves.

Jimenez posts a 1.15 ERA and 7-0 record in 10 appearances, also notching a pair of saves.  She has logged 48.2 innings pitched and leads the league in opposing BA, strikeouts, wins and saves, sits second in innings pitched and KLs.

Harper, meanwhile, is 5-2 with a 2.10 ERA in a league-leading 50.0 innings pitched.  The San Diego native also leads the league in KLs, is 2nd in strikeouts, and 4th in wins and OBA.

Offensively, the Toros are led by reigning CCAA Player of the Week Christina Chavez, who boasts the second-best batting average on the team behind fellow junior Jessica Hall, who leads the Toros with 23 hits and a .489 batting average.

Defense has been another key step in CSUDH's hot start as the Toros have committed just six errors compared to 27 for their opponents.

Chico State is the highest ranked of four CCAA teams included in the poll at No. 4.  Defending NCAA Champion UC San Diego sits at No. 10, Cal State Monterey Bay is at No. 13, while Sonoma State received votes.

The NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll is voted on by 16 NCAA Division II head coaches, two representing each of the eight NCAA regions.

The National Fastpitch Coaches Association is the professional growth organization for fastpitch softball coaches from all competitive levels of play.  In 1997, the Association's membership reached the 2,000 mark, and today there are more than 4,300 members.
