Softball Sweeps Cal State East Bay to Open Four-Game Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
CARSON -- Junior Stephanie Jimenez earned a win and a save as two Toros went deep en route to 4-0 and 8-0 (6) wins over visiting Cal State East Bay to kick off the weekend league series.

With the wins, CSUDH remains in first place in the CCAA at 6-0 and 11-2 overall, while the Pioneers fall to 7-5, 3-3 CCAA.

Game one's story centered on CSUDH starter Lauren Harper's finding her zone, and Cal State East Bay's pitchers missing their zone.

After the game's first run crossed the plate on a bases loaded hit batter in the third, CSUDH tallied three additional runs two innings later on a pair of bases loaded walks and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Daisy Beltran.

That was more than enough for Harper as she fanned 11 batters in 6.0 innings of work against just three walks, scattering two hits in the process.

Jimenez proved a worthy relief pitcher, entering in the 7th and fanning two of the four total batters she faced to secure her second save in as many opportunites.

It was more of the same in the nightcap as Jimenez and CSUEB starter Lauren Zweigle matched each other pitch for pitch in keeping both offenses off the scoreboard through four innings of play.

That all changed in the fifth, however, when a CSUEB error allowed the leadoff batter to reach base, setting the stage for Stephanie Hua who belted her first career home run three batters later for a 2-0 lead.

CSUDH put the game away one inning later as Christina Chavez roped a 2RBI double into right center field, and a Jimenez RBI single and Beltran 3-run blast ended the game via the run rule two batters later.

Jimenez picked up her fifth win in the process, fanning nine against just one walk while CSUDH's six hits were scattered amongst six different Toros in the win.

The two teams conclude their four-game set tomorrow morning, with first pitch of game one set for 11:00 am on Toro Diamond.
