Offense Sparks Toros to Regular Season Sweep Over Humboldt State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
CARSON -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team completed a sweep over visiting Humboldt State after taking 7-5 and 11-4 wins over the Lumberjacks today in Carson as Stephanie Jimenez garnered a win and a save while Jessica Hall (pictured) enjoyed a 4-for-6 effort on the afternoon that included 2 runs scored and 2 RBI.

With the wins, CSUDH has won nine in a row and sits at 9-2 overall and 4-0 in the CCAA, while HSU dips to 4-5 and 0-4 CCAA.

Unlike yesterday, the Jacks struck first after Courtney Hiatt sent an 0-1 offering from Toro starter Lauren Harper over the left field fence for the first of her two home runs in the game.

Tied at 1-1 after Hall's RBI double in the third, Hiatt did it again after depositing an 0-2 pitch from Harper again over the left field fence.

The Toros, however, would answer, plating four in their fourth-inning at -bat, using two Jack errors, two hit batters and a passed ball for their runs.

HSU used the long ball again to tie the score in the 6th, this time by Felicia Viveiros on another 0-2 offering from Harper, but again the Toros answered in their bottom half at-bat, scoring twice on a RBI singles by Melissa Pacheco and Daisy Beltran, the final two of eight hits on the day for the hosts.

The reigning CCAA leader in saves, Jimenez entered in the seventh for her first save opportunity of the year, and took advantage after facing four batters for her first of the season.

The nightcap looked to be a mirror image of yesterday as the Toros exploded for six in the bottom of the first to take a 6-1 lead, courtesy of four CSUDH hits and three HSU illegal pitches.

Unlike yesterday, however, the 'Jacks continued to flex their muscles after Viveiros belted her second home run of the game for two runs, and was followed by a solo shot by the next batter, Chrissy Stalf, to make it a 6-4 game.

But the Toros would score single runs in the fourth and fifth frames, and three in the sixth to put the game away, nearly mercying the Jacks again with the 12th run, only to have Alyssa Cruz caught stealing home after a passed ball.

Jimenez picked up the complete-game win to move to 4-0 on the year, scattering 7 hits and all four earned runs.  A trio of Toros belted two hits and drove in two RBI each as CSUDH won its ninth-consecutive game after dropping the first two of the year.

CSUDH continues its homestand next weekend against Cal State East Bay, with both Friday and Saturday twinbills set for 11 am starts on Toro Diamond.
