Strong First Half Lifts Toros to 79-66 Win Over Azusa Pacific

ONTARIO -- Junior Givon Crump led all scorers with a whopping 29 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field as Cal State Dominguez Hills used a huge first half to down Azusa Pacific, 79-66, in the Coyote Holiday Classic, hosted by CS San Bernardino.

The Toros move to 6-5 overall after taking the final game of the 2012 calendar year, while APU falls to 4-3.

Thanks to 15 points by Crump on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor that included a perfect 3-of-3 from long range, as well as a 53.3% success rate from the floor, the Toros raced to as large as a 15 point lead at 42-27 before settling for a 44-32 lead entering the break, with Lamine Diame chipping in 8 points on 4-of-5 shooting.

CSUDH continued to pressure the Cougars after the break, extending its advantage to 20 on a pair of DeShaun Freeman foul shots, and to a game-high 24 points on two more free throws, this time by Crump at the 13:03 mark.

APU managed to make a game of it by cutting its deficit to 13 at 70-57 nine minutes later, but the Cougars would get no closer than 10 points the rest of the way as the Toros drained their last 8 free throws of the game to seal the win.

Freeman and Diame each chipped in 9 points as CSUDH finished shooting at a 47.2% clip, while APU shot just 38.0% for the contest.

Turnovers proved key as CSUDH committed 7 fewer than APU, a stat that contributed to an 18-9 edge in points by the Toros.

CSUDH will kick off the 2013 calendar season at home on Friday, January 4, taking on CS Monterey Bay on the "Dave Yanai Court" in the Torodome, set for 7:30 pm first tip.  All home contests will be streamed live on the Toro Sports Network at www.GoToros.com/live.
