Men's Basketball Hoops It Up at Boys and Girls Club

CARSON -- As a prelude to this weekend's opening California Collegiate Athletic Association road trip at CS San Bernardino and UC San Diego, the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team took an afternoon away from practice to focus on a different kind of assist, one they delivered with gusto to the Carson Boys and Girls Club this past Tuesday.

Led by 9th-year head coach Damaine Powell, who attended the same Boys and Girls club growing up in Carson, the squad spent time reading with the kids, giving a bit of basketball instruction, and how both translate into real life lessons that are preached on the Carson campus.

"It was a fun time and we always enjoy giving back to a community that has always supported us," Powell begins.  "Although it is a kick for the kids, our players always get more out of it because they see the impact they are able to make in just a few hours.

"We read to the kids, did baskeball drills, had a Q&A session, and spoke to them about their education and how they can achieve it through hard work and dedication, and the kids were so excited for us to be there and really responded well to our players."

The men's basketball team, picked to finish fifth in a preseason CCAA poll conducted prior to the season, will play out the 2012 calendar year on the road before kicking off 2013 with a home league weekend starting with CS Monterey Bay on Friday, January 4, with tip-off set for 7:30 pm in the Torodome, on the Dave Yanai Court.
