Second-Half Surge Pushes Toros Past Cross-Town Rival, 62-55

CARSON -- Junior DeShaun Freeman scored 14 of his game-high 20 points in a sizzling second half as Cal State Dominguez Hills overcame a lackluster first half in which it was out-scored 29-18 and took a 62-55 win over cross-town rival Cal State L.A in the CCAA opener for both teams.

With the win, CSUDH evens its record to 2-2, with CSULA also evening its record at 1-1.

Here's head coach Damaine Powell on today's come-from-behind win.

The Toros endured a cold first half to open its home schedule, making just 6 of 23 shots with all four misses from 3-point land en route to an 11-point deficit entering the break.

After the break, however, CSUDH came out on fire, out-scoring the Golden Eagles 14-1 to take a 32-31 lead with 15:51 left in regulation, courtesy of a Freeman tip-in.

A triple by Givon Crump a minute and 30 seconds later gave CSUDH a 5-point lead at 38-33, stretching it to 9 at 55-46 on a Myron Green jumper with just under 5 minutes left en route to the 7-point win.

The Toros shot 45.5% from the field in the second half, including 5-of-10 from behind the arc, with Crump finishing 4-for-6 from 3-point land en route to 16 points on the night.

Lamine Diame pulled down a game-high 12 boards, with point guard Alex Strauther tallying 6 points, 6 assists and 4 steals.

During halftime of the contest, coaches and members of the Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team were honored in a plaque presentation and banner unveiling ceremony for claiming a share of the 2012 CCAA Title, presented by CSUDH VP Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Dr. Sue Borrego.

CSUDH will continue its homestand on Saturday as NAIA Biola visits the Torodome for a 1 pm tip.
