Toros Open CCAA's Second Half With 75-57 Win Over CS Monterey Bay

CARSON -- Senior guard Van Girard II led three Toros in double-figure scoring with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field as CCAA co-leader Cal State Dominguez Hills took a convincing 75-57 win over visiting Cal State Monterey Bay to kick off the second half of CCAA play.

With the win, CSUDH remains atop the CCAA with its 10-5 overall and 9-4 league mark, while CSUMB falls to 2-14 overall, and 1-11 in the CCAA.

The Toros looked like one of the league's elite, storming out to a 10-1 lead with just under five minutes elapsed in the contest.

CSUMB, however, took advantage of the Toros' cold spell by cutting its deficit to 12-9 on a Derrick Anderson free throw, only to have the hosts answer back and take their first double-figure lead at 27-17 with 3:15 left in the first half.

CSUDH built its largest lead of the period at 14 on a George McGrew freebie at the 2:39 mark, before entering the locker room with a 32-21 cushion.

The Toros began the second half the way they ended the first, taking control of the game early en route to building their largest lead of the game at 22, courtesy of a Girard free throw.

Free throws were an ancillary benefit of 52 fouls called between the two teams, with the squads combining for 39 makes in 68 attempts, including 20 makes by the home team.

CSUDH nailed 54.5% of its shots from the field, including a sizzling 68.4% after intermission, while the Otters managed just 32.7% from the field, helped by their 44.8% shooting in the second half of play.

Wayne Andrews chipped in 12 points and Cornell Jenkins 11 in the win as the Toros kept pace with Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino to remain just half a game behind league leader Humboldt State.

The Toros will conclude their four-game homestand tomorrow night against Cal State East Bay, which dropped a 78-71 decision earlier at Cal State L.A.  The game will be broadcast live on the Toro Sports Network at www.GoToros.com/live.
