Big Second Half Spurs 64-59 Win Over No. 20 Cal Poly Pomona

CARSON -- Senior Wayne Andrews led a trio of Toros who scored in double figures as Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 53.8% after the break en route to a frenetic 64-59 win over visiting Cal Poly Pomona.  Robert Willhite (pictured) chipped in 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor, including 2-of-2 from 3-point land.

With the win, CSUDH imporoves to 8-5, 7-4 CCAA, and moves into a 5-way tie for second place in league play with tomorrow's match-up against San Francisco State marking the end of the first round of CCAA action.

Cal Poly Pomona, meanwhile, falls to 10-4, 7-4 CCAA after dropping its third game in its last four contests.

After the hosts took an early 5-0 lead on a Myron Green free throw and buckets by Willhite and Andrews, the Broncos knotted the game at 7-7 en route to building a 28-24 lead entering the half, the last points coming on a triple by DeRonn Scott.

CPP kept momentum early in the second half by building a 38-28 lead at the 17:23 mark, before the Toros answered with a 12-3 run to cut their deficit to just one at 41-40 seven minutes later.

The Toros continued to light it up from the field after the break, turning a 42-41 lead after a George McGrew bucket on CSUDH's next possession into a 9-point edge at 59-50 with just 2:45 left in regulation.

The Broncos got as close as 62-59 on a Mitchel Anderson 3-pointer with 15 seconds left, but a pair of Cornell Jenkins free throws iced the game in the closing seconds, giving the Toros a win to start the final weekend of first round play.

After converting just 9-of-24 from the field in the first half, CSUDH made 14-of-26 after the break to close out the Broncos, while limiting CPP to just 34.5% shooting in the second period.

Anderson led all scorers with 16 points while Scott chipped in 14, but the Toros used a 35 to 27 rebound edge and a 6 to 2 block advantage to quell the Bronco would-be comeback.

CSUDH wraps up the first half of CCAA play tomorrow night as San Francisco State makes its annual visit to Carson, with first tip set for 7:30 pm on the Dave Yanai Court in the Torodome.  At halftime of the contest, members of the women's track and field team will be honored for their 2011 NCAA 4x400 National Title.

The game will be broadcast live on the Toro Sports Network at www.GoToros.com/live.
