Toros Taken Down by the Lumberjacks on the Road

ARCATA -- In their furthest match away from home, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros volleyball squad faced a rising Humboldt State team on Saturday night in Arcata.  The Lumberjacks were able to use a stellar defense and stifle the Toros attack en route to a straigt-set sweep.  Freshman #Azieanna Smith# led the team with 11 kills on a career-high 40 attacks.

In set one CSUDH was able to stay close for most of the match with a balanced attack until the score was 14-11.  However, the home squad turned a three-point lead into a final 11-point gap thanks to scoring 11 of the last 14 points in the set.  Smith had a team-high three kills in the set.

Set two saw HSU take a 10-4 advantage before the Toros exploded for eightstraight points to take a 12-10 lead.  The Lumberjacks were able to take the lead back and slowly pull away to take a closely contested 25-23 set two victory.  Smith once again led the team, this time with seven kills including scoring five of eight Toro points at one stretch.

The Lumberjacks controlled set three much like set one with the team being tied at 7-all before the tide turned.  Nine straight and 11 of 12 HSU points turned the gap into one that the Toros could not whittle away, leading to the 25-16 final score.  In the final set sophomore #Elizabeth Krieger# led the way with three kills.

For the match CSUDH could not overcome the block and attack percentage deficits, coming up shot in blocks 9-3 and attack percentage .216 to .092.  Krieger led the team with 21 digs to go along with eight kills while senior #Olivia White# dished out a team-high 24 assists.  Juniors #Rose Greco and Delea Pursel# added 10 digs and two block assists, respectively.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros will return to Los Angeles county to play their crosstown rival Cal State L.A. on Wednesday night with the match set to begin at 7:00pm in the Eagles Nest.
