LOS ANGELES -- Playing their first of three matches this week, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros volleyball team battled its crosstown rival Cal State L.A. on Wednesday night. CSUDH was game throughout the entire match but was unable to defeat CSULA, dropping the CCAA match in three sets (22-25, 22-25, 19-25). Sophomore
Elizabeth Krieger recorded her second double-double on the season, one of two Toros to do so, tallying 10 kills and digs each.
Set one was tight throughout with neither team holding a lead of over three points with the last tie at 17 apiece. A quick two straight points by CSULA proved enough of a gap for the home squad to hold on to a 25-22 set one victory. Junior middle blocker
Delea Pursel registered half her kills in the first set with four.
The second set saw the visiting Toros start fast and take a 12-9 lead to seize some momentum. CSULA scored nine of the next 13 points to take an 18-16 edge, one they would hold for the rest of the set en route to an identical 25-22 final. Krieger notched a team-high four kills in the set.
In the third and final set, the Toros fell behind by as many as six points before nearly turning the tide. With the score 15-9 in favor of the home squad, CSUDH scored eight of the next 11 points to bring the gap down to only one point at 18-17. However the surge was not enough as the Golden Eagles scored seven of the next nine to end the third set at 25-19.
For the match, CSUDH outblocked CSULA four to three while losing the hitting percentage battle .298 to .183. Pursel notched eight kills and three total blocks on the evening while sophomore
Abbey Prusa scored eight kills on only 19 swings for a .412 hitting percentage. Senior
Olivia White was the second Toro to record a double-double, leading the team with 27 assists and tying for the team-high with 10 digs.
Cal State Dominguez Hills will return to the Torodome this Friday night against the San Francisco State Gatorsm with first serve set for 7:00pm. The match can be seen live via internet television on
