Volleyball Opens Season With 3-0 Victory Over Dominican, Go 1-1 on Day One of Tourney

SAN BERNARDINO -- In her first game as head coach, #Jennifer Adeva# relied on a mixture of newcomers and returners to guide the team to a win as the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toro volleyball team premiered with a 3-0 victory over Dominican University at the Coyotes' Labor Day Classic.  Freshman #Azieanna Smith# showed well for herself in her first career collegiate match with nine kills, seven digs and two service aces.

In the second match, however, No. 17 Western Washington was too much in a 25-12, 25-21, 25-13 sweep to even CSUDH's day at 1-1.

In the first set of the opener, CSUDH built an early 6-2 lead on a Smith kill, maintaining a lead between two-to-six points until a late 4-0 run tied the score at 20.  After a timeout, the Toros scored five of the next six points for a 25-21 set one victory.  Junior newcomer #Delea Pursel# contributed on three of the last five CSUDH points with two kills and a block assist.

Set two saw the score go back-and-forth with the Toros trailing as late as 13-12.  However, four straight CSUDH points and eight of the next 11 saw the Toros pull away late and take another 25-21 set win.  Sophomore #Elizabeth Krieger# finished the set on a tear, scoring three of the final four points of the set on kills.

The final set saw CSUDH explode to a quick 16-2 lead before easing off the gas pedal and closing out their season-opening match with a third set 25-12 victory.  Sophomore #Abbey Prusa# led the early charge, smashing four of her seven total kills for the first 13 points of the set, including three straight at one point.

For the match Krieger led the team with 10 kills, senior #Olivia White led in assists with 28 and four-year senior Cassidy Mangum# topped the team with three service aces to tie a career-high, also chipping in 13 digs.  Pursel led with three blocks while Prusa extended her block streak to 14 matches dating back to last season, with two block assists.

The Vikings raced out to a 9-1 lead in set one of the late match, increasing it to 18-7 and then to 24-11 on a Bailey Jones kill before a Toro attack gave WWU a 25-12 win.

Set two saw the Toros make a game of it, tying the set twice, the last at 16-all, before WWU went on a 9-5 run to close the set and take a 2-0 lead.  That momentum continued through set three as the Vikings turned an early 3-3 tie into a 22-11 edge on a Marlayna Geary blast en route to a 25-13 win on the final CSUDH ball-handling error of the evening.

CSUDH hit just .037 as a team compared to .308 for the Vikings.  Smith led the way with 6 kills, while Mangum's 9 digs and White's 20 assists paced the Toros in those categories.

The Toros, now 1-1, conclude the Coyote Classic tomorrow with a noon match against Alaska Anchorage, followed by a 5pm showdown against Western Oregon.
