Toros Go Winless Against Two GNAC Opponents at Coyotes' Labor Day Classic

SAN BERNARDINO -- Following a 1-1 day one at the Coyotes' Labor Day Classic, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros faced West Region power in Alaska-Anchorage and Western Oregon on Saturday.  CSUDH's offense played well in both matches, but it was not enough as the Seawolves won 3-0 before the Wolves took home a close nightcap 3-1.  Sophomore #Abbey Prusa# notched 22 kills with a .275 attack percentage to go along with four block assists.

In the afternoon match, set one saw the Seawolves take an early lead with the Toros keeping themselves within striking distance throughout.  A kill by Prusa made it only a three-point deficit at 20-17 before UAA went on to score five of the next six points to take the set 25-18.

The second set was almost deja vu all over again with UAA scoring first and growing a lead of up to five points before CSUDH battled back.  The score was tied as late as 12-12 and a kill by sophomore Elizabeth Krieger made it a two point deficit at 17-15.  But just like in set one, the Seawolves turned it on, outscoring the Toros 8-1 to take set two 25-16.

A lineup change did not help as the Seawolves exploded in the third set to a 12-4 lead before seven straight Toro points made it a one point game.  CSUDH battled to a 17-all tie before UAA closed out the set and match on an 8-3 run to sweep the match 3-0.

The nightcap saw CSUDH keep the first set within six points throughout, but the Toros were unable to close late and fell 25-20.  Krieger led the team with five kills in the set.

Set two saw CSUDH take an early lead and slowly pull away to 18-13 before four straight WOU points prompted a timeout by head coach #Jennifer Adeva#.  The break would prove to be important as the Toros scored seven of the next nine points to even the match at one set apiece with a 25-19 victory.  Pursel used her size to garner one solo block and three block assists in the set.

Western Oregon scored early and often to take the third set 25-17, never letting the Toros get into the game thanks to six service aces in the set.

The fourth set was close throughout with neither team leading by more than four points.  Despite not leading after an early 4-2 lead, CSUDH managed to tie the score at 20, 22, 23 and 24 before two straight WOU kills ended the set and match at 26-24.

For the afternoon, Krieger led the team with 30 kills and tied with senior #Cassidy Mangum# for the lead with 21 digs.  Prusa had four block assists and a career-high six digs in the match against WOU.  Pursel was a blocking machine with two solo and eight block assists in total on the afternoon.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros volleyball team will begin CCAA play next week on the road against a pair of undefeated teams in 3-0 Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday before traveling to Seaside to face 2010 CCAA runner-up and 4-0 Cal State East Bay on Saturday.
