Toros Fall in Three at Cal State East Bay

HAYWARD -- Facing last year's CCAA runner-up Cal State East Bay, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros did their best to keep the pace, eventually falling 25-12, 25-22 and 25-19.  Junior #Delea Pursel# had a solid match, racking up two block assists and six kills.

The first set saw the Pioneers quickly run out to a 9-3 lead before slowly pulling away to a 25-12 set victory.  Pursel and sophomore #Elizabeth Krieger# each contributed three kills to lead the visitors.

After CSUEB scored the first point of set two, CSUDH scored five straight and eight of the next 10 to lead 8-3.  The Pioneers slowly came back, tying the score at 14 before battling back and forth.  The teams tied at every point between 18 and 22 before CSUEB closed the set on a 3-0 rally to take set two 25-22.  A balanced attack help keep it close as six different Toros notched at least one kill in the set.

Set three started out like set one with the Pioneers taking an early 6-2 before the Toros battled to get within two points at 10-8.  CSUEB scored eight of the next nine in a 12-4 run with a late 6-point CSUDH rally closed the final gap to 25-19.  Junior #Whitney Lee# was everywhere in the set, racking up five of her six kills on the night.

For the match Krieger led the team with nine kills, followed by Lee, Pursel and sophomore #Abbey Prusa# with six kills.  Junior #Rose Greco led the way with 17 digs while senior Olivia White# had a team-high 31 assists.

Efficiency proved CSUDH's downfall as nine more errors and five less kills led to a .143 hitting percentage compared to .277 for the hosts.

The Toros, now 1-5, 0-2 CCAA, will debut at home against powerhouse UC San Diego on Friday at 7:00pm at the Torodome.
