Balance Gives Toros 6-0 and 8-2 Sweep Over CS East Bay

Freshman Brittany Brenner closed strong with 4RBI in the nightcap win

HAYWARD -- Nine different batters accounted for 10 hits in today's opening game while seven stroked 10 hits against Cal State East Bay as the Toros swept Saturday's twinbill by 6-0 and 8-2 counts over the Pioneers.  Freshmen Veronica Vazquez and Brittany Brenner dealt CSUEB the big blows offensively.

CSUDH hurlers Lauren Harper and Stephanie Jimenez each picked up a win and a save in the sweep.

The Toros kicked off the scoring in the first as Khryssi Steele was plunked on a 2-2 pitch, advanced to second on a sacrifice, to third on a ground out and to home on an illegal pitch in the opener.

That's where the score remained until fifth when Daisy Beltran belted a double to center to send Brittany Brenner to third, setting the stage for a Jessica Amador single that plated pinch-runner Chelsea Miller to double the score.

The visitors aded another run an inning later on a Cassandra Snodgrass RBI single, before Vazquez put the game away after turning on a 1-0 pitch and lacing it down the left field line to score three.

CSUDH starter Harper picked up her second win of the series after throwing 4.0 innings and fanning three, with reliever Jimenez earning the save with 3.0 innings of 4-hit ball, fanning one Pioneer in the process.

The Toros continued their offensive show in the nightcap, putting across two runs in each of the first three frames as Brenner roped a 2RBI double in the first and stroked an RBI single in the second, while Daisy Beltran belted her third home run of the year in the third, a 2-run variety, staking starter Jimenez to a 6-0 lead.

CSUDH pushed its lead to 7-0 an inning later on a Brenner sacrifice fly, before CSUEB pushed across its first run of the afternoon in their fourth at-bat on a solo shot.

That's where the score remained until the final inning, when a Snodgrass sacrifice fly was answered by another solo shot by the Pioneers to account for the final 8-2 count.

Jimenez and Harper each allowed just three hits in the win, with Brenner tallying two hits and 4RBI to lead the offensive charge as Steele and Emiley McEwen also contributed two hits each.

The Toros, now 24-17, 14-10 CCAA, maintained their 4th-place league status by taking 3-of-4 from the Pioneers, and return home next weekend for their final homestand against Chico State, with the Wildcats sitting two games ahead of the Toros in the league standings.
