Gould Golden as Toros Ease to 9-1 Opening Game Win Before 3-1 Loss in Nightcap at CSUEB

Gould's bat was so hot, she had to wear shades en route to a 5RBI game one effort

HAYWARD -- Senior Krista Gould went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with five runs batted in as Cal State Dominguez Hills rolled to a 9-1, 5-inning win over host Cal State East Bay in game one of today's afternoon double-header, before the hosts returned the favor in a 3-1 nightcap win.

Gould missed out on tying the all time CSUDH single game RBI record by two in the opening game as the Toros move to 22-17, 12-10 CCAA.

The Toros started their offensive attack early, pushing five across in their first-inning at-bat.  Jessica Amador began the run-fest by drawing a one-out walk, moving to third on a double-steal and scoring on the first of Gould's hits, a 2RBI double to the gap in right-center.

A single by Veronica Vazquez plated home CSUDH's third run of the frame, before Elizabeth Jimenez capped the scoring by belting the first collegiate home run of her career, a 2-run variety.

One inning later, a Khryssi Steele double began a 3-run outburst, with the big blow coming on a Gould 2RBI single.

CSUDH added its final run of the game two innings later as Gould produced her fifth and final RBI of the day, before the hosts put across their lone run of the game in the bottom of the 5th on a two-out home run of Toro starter Lauren Harper, the sophomore's lone mistake of the day.

Harper picked up the win after scattering just four hits, fanning 5 against just 2 walks in improving to 10-8 on the year.

Jimenez finished with 2 hits, while Amador, Jessica Hall and Cassandra Snodgrass each crossed the plate twice in the win.

The nightcap was a different story, however, as neither team was able to push across any runs through the first two innings.

CSUDH broke through in the third as Amador belted an RBI double to center, bringing home Steele who doubled in the previous at-bat.

Unlike the opener, however, the Pioneers replied nearly immediately after with an RBI double of their own, knotting the game at 1-1 after four innings.

After the Toros went quietly in the fifth, CSUEB plated two runs in their 5th-inning at-bat, cashing in a single and double to lead off the inning.

CSUDH had a chance to make the game close in the sixth after putting runners at the corners with none out, but Pioneer pitcher Talia Ferrari induced a strikeout, pop up and fly out to end the threat.

Leaving runners on base proved contagious for the Toros in their final at-bat as well after loading the bases with no one out failed to push across any runs as Ferrari followed her sixth-inning escape with nearly the exact sequence of a strikeout, pop up and ground out to end the game.

The Toros tallied a 9-to-8 hit edge in the nightcap as four CSUDH players collected two hits each in the loss.

Freshman Karen Peterson tossed 3.0 innings in her first collegiate start in her no-decision, allowing just two hits with two strikeouts.

The two teams conclude their four-game set tomorrow morning, with first pitch set for 11:00 am on the Pioneer Softball Field.
