Softball Ends TOC With Two Wins in Platinum Bracket

Snodgrass lone Toro named to TOC All-Tournament team

McEwen went deep against CS San Bernardino in the 2-0 win to close the TOC

TURLOCK -- Beginning the Tournament of Champions with two losses on day one, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros ended the TOC with a pair of wins, including a 2-0 decision over CS San Bernardino in the Platinum bracket finale, led by an Emiley McEwen home run, after a come-from-behind win over Western Washington earlier.

The win over the Coyotes, which gave CSUDH a 4-3 record in the Tournament of Champions, was just the second victory in nine games against CSUSB, and moves the Toros to a 21-16 record with just 12 CCAA games to go in the regular season.

Against the 'Yotes, neither squad was able to push across any runs until the sixth inning, when CSUDH notched the only two runs of the game.

McEwen got the scoring started with a one-out blast, before consecutive doubles one batter later gave the Toros an insurance run.

That was plenty for the tandem of CSUDH starter Lauren Harper and reliever Stephanie Jimenez, who teamed to hold the high-powered Coyote offense to just three hits, compared to seven for the Toros, with two apiece from McEwen and Krista Gould.

In the earlier game against Western Oregon, the Wolves jumped out to a 2-0 deficit before the Toros again found their stroke in the sixth inning.

In the frame, McEwen started the rally with a one-out single, with pinch-runner Chelsea Miller advancing to second on a wild pitch.

Eventual winning pitcher Stephanie Jimenez then doubled home CSUDH's first run of the game before moving to third on a passed ball, where she scored on a sacrifice fly by Gould to knot the game at 2-2.

A Jessica Hall double and two walks loaded the bases for Destiney Ruiz, who notched the eventual game-winner the hard way by getting hit by a pitch to bring home Hall with the third run of the inning.

Jimenez picked up the win after entering in the 4th inning, with McEwen and Jessica Amador notching two hits apiece in the win.

For her efforts during the tournament, senior Cassandra Snodgrass was the lone Toro named to the TOC All-Tournament team after hitting .500 with 4 walks and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage behind the dish.

Currently in fourth place in the CCAA, the Toros resume league play next weekend at Cal State Hayward looking to be one of four teams that qualify for the CCAA Championship Tournament beginning in late April.
