McEwen and Jimenez Earn 2nd-Team All-CCAA Honors

Toros drop one to No. 10 in NCAA region poll despite splitting at Sonoma State last weekend

Sophomore Stephanie Jimenez (L) and junior Emiley McEwen were both named to the CCAA 2nd-team
WALNUT CREEK -- Last year's CCAA Player of the Year Emiley McEwen (pictured, right) and sophomore pitching sensation Stephanie Jimenez both earned 2nd-team All-California Collegiate Athletic Association honors, it was announced earlier today, with the Toros falling one spot to No. 10 in the latest NCAA west region poll, also released earlier.

This is the third CCAA honor for McEwen in her three years as a Toro, and the first for Jimenez.

McEwen has been amongst the league leaders in multiple offensive categories during the year, ending the regular season 5th in slugging percentage, tied for 5th in base on balls, 6th in home runs, 7th in on-base percentage, tied for 8th in RBI and 9th in total bases while boasting on CCAA Player of the Week nod in early February.

The Anaheim Hills native has 11 multi-hit games, 7 multi-RBI contests, and a team-best 7-game hitting streak, needing just one home run to tie the single-season record she set last year, with each big fly adding to her career record of 28.

Jimenez has enjoyed a stellar sophomore campaign, leading the 1-2 Toros' pitching punch with 13 wins, a 2.43 ERA, 8 complete games, 121 strikeouts and 6 saves.  She has fanned 4 batters on 14 occasions, with a season-high 9 strikeouts at CS Monterey Bay on March 4, and 8 strikeouts three times.

Nationally, Jimenez sits in 2nd place in the NCAA with her six saves, with the next closest CCAA competitor three saves below in a tie for 12th place.

Individually, Humboldt State's Chrissy Stalf and UC San Diego's Camille Gaito earned respective CCAA Player and Pitcher of the Year honors, with Triton Mya Romero taking home Freshman of the Year honors and Chico State's Sam Baker claiming Newcomer of the Year honors.

UC San Diego head coach Patti Gerkens earned Coach of the Year accolades after the Tritons finished the regular season with a 34-11 overall and 22-9 CCAA record.

In the regional poll, the Toros dipped a spot to No. 10 despite taking a pair of road wins from then-No. 4 seeded Sonoma State.

With just eight teams qualifying for the NCAA postseason, the Toros will most likely have to win the CCAA tournament to assure themselves a spot in the national playoffs, with the double-elimination tournament set to begin on Friday as the Toros face top-seeded and NFCA No. 8 UC San Diego, from whom the Toros took 3-of-4 regular season games early in the season to account for a third of the Tritons' nine league losses.

The Tritons took over the top spot in the west, with defending NCAA Champion Hawai'i Pacific moving up to No. 2, followed by Chico State, Western Washington, Sonoma State, Dixie State, CS San Bernardino and Central Washington occupying the top eight spots as Hawai'i Hilo and the Toros are on the outside looking in.

The CCAA Tournament kicks off on Friday at 4:30 as the Toros and Tritons hook up in first-round action, with the semifinals taking place on Saturday.  To follow all the action, click
