Reyes Raises Toros to Split at Sonoma State in 2-1 Nightcap Win

ROHNERT PARK -- Junior Jackie Reyes belted the most important double of the season in game two of today's twinbill at Sonoma State, driving home both runs in the 2-1 nightcap win to keep the Toros alive in the hunt for the California Collegiate Athletic Association postseason tournament with a split against the Seawolves.

With the split, and Humboldt State's sweep of CS San Bernardino, the Toros hold their fate in their own hands as two wins tomorrow will capture the fourth and final spot in the upcoming CCAA Championship Tournament, while one win will require help from Chico State in its four-game season-ending set against CS Monterey Bay, which would need to sweep the Wildcats to push the Toros out of the tournament.

The Toros wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard in the nightcap after being blanked in the opener.  After a Krista Gould single to open the second inning and a  Veronica Vazquez baseknock one out later brought Reyes to the plate, the junior first baseman belted the first of her two doubles down the left field line off game one winner Samantha Lipperd for a 2-0 lead.

That was the extent of the offense until the bottom of the fifth when SSU opened the frame with consecutive singles, prompting Stephanie Jimenez to spell starter Lauren Harper, who had given up just one hit prior to the fifth.

Jimenez induced a double play from the first batter she faced as the runner on first moved to second, but Jesse Talaugon sent a 2-2 offering into center field one batter later to plate SSU's first run and cut the lead in half.

Jimenez would buckle down after that, however, retiring the final six batter she faced for the save, and split, as both Reyes and Gould each knocked two hits in the nightcap.

Game one was a pitcher's duel from the first pitch as starters Harper and Lipperd allowed just two hits apiece over the first three innings.

SSU opened the fourth inning with two singles to put runners on second and third with no out, prompting a Toro pitching change.  Reliever Jimenez was up to the challenege, however, inducing a fly out, pop up and line out on six pitches to escape the jam.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the seventh when Ali Palermo singled to lead off the frame, and was pinch run for by Tatiana Pizarro.  After advancing to second on a wild pitch, she stole third two outs later and scored on an RBI single by Danielle D'Eccliss to end the game.

Jimenez suffered the loss after tossing 3.2 innings and just two hits, both in the seventh inning, with Jessica Hall notching the third hit of the game for the Toros.

CSUDH, now 26-21, 16-14 CCAA, will conclude its regular season against the Seawolves tomorrow morning, with first pitch of game one set for 11:00 am on Seawolf Field.  You can follow the game live via live stats.
