Wildcats Spoil Softball's "Senior Day" in 5-1 & 2-1 Sweep

Toros stay ahead of Coyotes for fourth and final spot in CCAA tourney by a slim .53571 to .53125 margin

CARSON -- Three different Chico State players hit multi-RBI home runs today, and that was more than enough as the Wildcats took 5-1 and 2-1 wins over host Cal State Dominguez Hills to take a 3 games to 1 series win, spoiling Cal State Dominguez Hills' "Senior Day" festivities.

Cal State East Bay, however, provided the seniors and their teammates with a reprieve after taking the nightcap against CS San Bernardino today, keeping the Toros ahead of the Coyotes in the race for the fourth and final spot in the upcoming CCAA Championship Tournament with four games left in the regular season by a slim .53571 to .53125 margin.

Game one was a pitcher's duel early as Toro Lauren Harper and Wildcat Sam Baker combined to allow just four hits over the first three innings.

Chico State got on the board first in the 4th inning as a one-out single set the table for Baker, who helped herself by turning on Harper's first pitch and sending her blast over the fence down the left field line for a 2-0 lead.

The Wildcats then put up three more runs an inning later off CSUDH reliever Stephanie Jimenez as Hailey Stockman stepped to the plate with two runners on, and sent a Jimenez full-count offering just over the center field fence for a 5-0 lead.

The Toros showed life in their 5th-inning at-bat as a Jackie Reyes single, a Jessica Hall single one out later and a Wildcat error loaded the bases with just one out, but Baker regained her focus and fanned the next two Toro batters on identical 1-2 counts to escape the jam.

CSUDH forced Baker to just make 92 pitches in the opener, including just 79 after six innings of play in which the Toros scored their lone run after a Veronica Vazquez sacrifice fly plated Emiley McEwen, who doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on some heads-up baserunning after a pop fly was caught in foul territory down the first base line.

Five Toros notched a hit each, while Stockman led all batters with 2 hits in CSUC's win.

Game two looked to mirror the opener as neither team was able to a run on the board through four and a half innings.

CSUDH broke through first in its 5th inning at-bat as Daisy Beltran stroked a one-out single to left field and moved to second on an error before scoring on a Khryssi Steele baseknock to center.

The Toros' momentum was short-lived, however, as the Wildcats answered in the 6th as a lead-off walk proved fatal after Rachel Failia sent a line drive over the center field fence two outs later for a 2-1 lead.

CSUC's Baker did the rest, retiring 6 of the final 8 batters she faced to pick up her second win in as many games.

Steele and Beltran finished with two hits apiece as the Toros fell to 25-20, 15-13 CCAA, needing a strong showing at Sonoma State next weekend to make the field of four.  Currently, SSU has a .65625 winning percentage, but has won just three of its last six contests.

Conversely, the Coyotes travel to Arcata to face a Humboldt State team on the upswing after winning three of four and five of eight games to push its winning percentage to .42307.

After today's "Senior Day" festivities began with a stirring rendition of the National Anthem by freshman Melissa Pacheco and the first pitch thrown by parents of the three seniors, the Toros continued the ceremony in between games by honoring their three seniors in Jessica Amador, Krista Gould and Cassandra Snodgrass for their contributions to the softball program, presenting framed jerseys in their honor after their teammates and families formed a human tunnel through which they walked.
