Great Defense and Better Pitching Lead Toros to 4-0 Nightcap Win Over Chico State

CARSON --  Following a tough game one loss in a matchup of the third and fourth place teams in the CCAA, it was a battle of wills in game two.  Led by a stellar defense and the equally great starting pitching of Lauren Harper, Cal State Dominguez Hills took a 4-0 game two win over Chico State.  Harper totaled 11 innings of work, allowing only five hits, one earned run while striking out four Wildcats.

With the split, the Toros maintain their fourth-place standing in moving to 25-18, 15-11 CCAA, as fifth-place CS San Bernardino also split its twinbill, falling 3-1 to CS East Bay in game one before a 7-0 win in the nightcap.

The home half of game two's first inning began with a double to right center byKhryssi Steele, who scored on an RBI single by Emiley McEwen to give CSUDH an early 1-0 lead.

Great plays by the Toro defense kept the score at 1-0 before CSUDH scored some huge insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.

A three-run rally almost never happened save for a defensive inference call that negated the third and final out.  From there CSUDH took advantage of its good fortune by getting three straight two-out hits to score three two-out runs to give the Toros the victory at a 4-0 final score.

Seven Toros collected a hit apiece as Harper allowed just three hits in the nightcap win.

In the opener,
CSUDH loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first on two errors and a walk, scoring only one run on an RBI single by Veronica Vasquez, only to have the Wildcats knot the score at one on a solo bomb to center.

Jackie Reyes led off the bottom of the second with a deep double down the left field line, coming around to score a consecutive sacrifices.  Once again Chico State tied the game, this time thanks to a two-out error allowing a runner to score from third.

In her first inning of work out of the pen in the top of the fifth, Stephanie Jimenez gave up two runs to bring the score to 4-2 Chico State.

CSUDH did rally for one run, with Jessica Amador scoring from second on a heads-up play after the Wildcat second baseman booted her second grounder of the afternoon.  However, that was the end of the scoring, with CSUC grabbing the 4-3 victory in the opener.

Prior to game one's first pitch, 10 Toros were recognized for their excellence in the classroom and in the community as Daisy Beltran, Destiney Ruiz, Lauren Harper, Veronica Vazquez, Jessica Hall, Jessica Amador, Elizabeth Jimenez, Karen Peterson, Krista Gould and Melissa Pacheco all received certificates from the NCAS as part of the 24th Annual National Student-Athlete Day, presented by CSUDH Director of Athletics Patrick Guillen and head coach Jim Maier.

The two teams will hook up again tomorrow morning at 11:00 am to conclude CSUDH's regular season homestand.  In between games, the Toros will honor their three seniors in Gould, Cassandra Snodgrass and Amador, who will then play their final game on Toro Diamond.  The twinbill can be heard live via the Toro Sports Network at
